Chapter 47
by
SG
What now?
An interesting morning.
Sam felt consciousness return without much fanfare. She opened her eyes to see Jake's ceiling, then looked to her side to see her sister and herself watching her.
"Sam?" Janet asked. That was her name.
"Yes," she intoned dully, then remembered. "And no."
"Wow, I'm really like that when I'm not attached to anybody? Oh, right, of course it is." the real Sam asked. "Still, she's so spacey. She's just staring at us."
Sam knew she was just staring at them. Sometime during the night, the real Sam must have unbound and touched her. No, her head was clear - it must have been this morning, after the pills wore off.
"Sam, we need to try a few things," Janet told her. She nodded. "We need to get a handle on your new condition."
"And you put me in a detached state so I wouldn't freak out."
"God, she's like a zombie," Sam said. "It's kind of creeping me out. Can we put her back to- oh, right. I'll just unbind from you again."
Her face slackened, matching Jake/Sam's apathetic stare perfectly. Janet explained the new Sam's task: she was supposed to resist being overwritten when Janet touched her.
"I already tried that," she offered in a dull monotone. "Last night."
"Not ideal circumstances," Janet replied. "Let's try again. I'll try to resist imprinting too. Ready?"
Sam nodded and her sister gently placed a hand on her shoulder. She felt her Samness slipping away as Janetness poured into her and she feebly tried to stem the tide. As the old nothingness gave way, the Janet part of her had an idea. She focused on her hair - no, not her hair, Sam's hair - and tried to hold onto it. She was blonde, she was blonde, it was long and thick and boys used to pull on her ponytail and she was Janet but she had that hair, that Sam hair, and then she was fully Janet and Janet was staring at her in shock.
"What?" she asked. "I guess it didn't work. I feel pretty Janet-y right now."
"I think it worked a little bit," the real Janet said and pointed to her forehead. Jake/Janet brought her hands to her face and pulled down her bangs. Nothing seemed wrong about them, except they didn't match Janet's.
"Oh, shit!" she said suddenly. "This isn't your hair! I kept Sam's hair!" The real Sam's only reaction to her name was a slight raise of one eyebrow as she continued to stare at nothing.
"Why do you sound so surprised?" Janet asked. "That's what you were trying to do."
Jake/Janet thought about the question. Why was she surprised? "It... it's my hair, though. It's not like I'm Janet with Sam's hair. I'm me, Janet, and this is my hair. I not only kept the hair, I kept the part of me that identifies it as mine."
"So you were able to delineate attributes," Janet said thoughtfully. "And the one you chose to keep remained a fixed part of your identity. You're mostly me, but not completely."
Jake/Janet nodded. Then she had an idea and saw in the real Janet's face that her doppelganger had the same idea.
"Wait!" she cried, but was too late to stop Janet from reaching out and putting a hand on her wrist.
What did Janet do?
