Chapter 33 by Shandor Shandor

What's next?

An awkward night

Sofia and I went inside the tent. We were both super embarrassed about the whole thing.

“Could you, ah, turn around for a bit,” she asked.

“Why?” I asked.

“Uh, I, uh, sleep in just my underwear,” she said nervously.

“OH! Sorry,” I said, turning around. I heard the rustling of clothes. Suppressing the urge to look, I waited until she gave me the all clear. When I turned around, she was already inside her sleeping bag, turned the other way. I followed suit, setting my gear and boots at the edge of the tent before climbing inside my sleeping bag.

“That was one heck of a day, huh?” she said.

“You’re telling me. First bandits, then I get chased down by a giant bat-lion,” I said. “Thankfully, you were here, or we’d probably be dead. Those fire spells really come in handy often, don’t they.”

“Glad to be of help,” she said, beaming.

“So did you give any thought to what I said earlier? About why you can only use fire magic?” I asked.

“I did. It’s a real possibility. I just wouldn’t be able to know. It takes a high level mage to be able to use curses, and it’s also pretty advanced magic to detect and cure curses as well. It’s more likely that I’m just no good at other magic. I mean, there have been specialized mages for centuries, so maybe it isn’t as uncommon as I think,” she sighed.

“Sorry to bring it up. It must be a sore subject. Whatever the case, just know that you’re already super helpful, other magic or no,” I said.

“Thanks Flynn,” she said. “I’m gonna go to sleep now.”

“Good night, Sofia,” I said.
