Chapter 8

What’s next?
An alternative route
“Yes?” You glance at Peleus, looking past him towards the street behind him to see the fountain placed at the end of it, located a hundred yards or so from where you’re currently positioned. Even at this distance, you can easily make out that the statue that forms the centre of the fountain depicts Poseidon, his naked form a glimmering green as the sunlight hits both it and the water spewing forth from the large fish that is clutched in his right hand.
“That’s Little Poseidon,” Peleus immediately explains to you, his tone of voice suggesting that it means something to him, and ought to do so to you as well.
“And?” You ask, wondering what it is about the statue that makes it little and once more thanking your lucky star that Peleus made it through the storming of the walls unscathed. You all would have been in nasty situation if the one of you possessing local knowledge of Athenapolis hadn’t made it into the city.
“Miltos said his daughter was living right next to Erechtheus and the three dryads, right?” Peleus asks, and you nod your head, with all of you being conscious of the fact that you can’t allow yourselves to be standing out in the open for too long.
“I know how to get there from Little Poseidon,” Peleus explains, sounding confident of his ability to do as he promises, ensuring that the four of you will be able to avoid the major streets in the process.
This is not the time to ask Peleus for an elaborate description of the route that you’ll have to take, so you instead throw a glance at Telamon, who nods his head to show that he thinks you ought to trust Peleus’ judgment.
“Alright Peleus, lead the way,” you quickly decide, and you and your men set off down the narrow street, quickly moving away from the route that you had first followed, heading instead towards the statue of Poseidon.
When you reach the circular square that surrounds the statue, you all follow Peleus’ lead by cutting alongside the houses on the left-hand side of it, each one of you keeping a lookout for the faintest hints of any possible threats whatsoever. You do get the chance to throw a glance at the statue of Poseidon as it shimmers in the sunlight, and a thin smile crosses your lips and you’re **** to struggle hard to keep from offending the God of the Seas when you happen to glance between his legs and recognize where this statue got the belittling moniker from. Still, your current situation is perilous enough that even Attalus refrains from scoffing at the manifestation of Poseidon, though you know for a fact that he views all the gods but his as nothing more than a gathering of demons, abominations and old wives’ tales, and you’ve always suspected that he finds the latter of those to be the most contemptible.
Having made your way past Little Poseidon and onto one of the winding streets that’ll hopefully bring you towards your destination, you stop for just long enough to allow Peleus the time needed to tell you “Agamemnon’s folly’s next,” before you all push on. By now, Telamon’s got his bow ready, and Attalus has switched from his gladius to his faix as you all move at a steady and rapid pace.
