Chapter 32 by skedlee
What do you find in Star City
An abandoned hotel in the Glades
The familiar feeling of the Watchtower teleporter overcomes you, and you soon appear in a rough area in what must be the Glades. Decrepit buildings line the street, and you wonder just how low the police presence is here. You move to ask Laurel, but she can see the question in your eyes and shakes you off. You resolve to focus on the mission, and decide that the best vantage point would be on top of a building. You motion at the building, and she nods at you. You begin your climb up the building, and are certainly glad that the nanobots improved your wrist and grip strength to the level that scaling buildings is an effortless task.
You clamber up onto the only to see Laurel there already. You're confused, but then you see a zipline hanging of the edge. Apparently she beat you up here, and you try not to take it too personally. She is the hero that you're shadowing, so she should be able to outdo you in many ways. Still though, you resolve to improve yourself. You don't want to be the hero on support duty when the earth's existence was being threatened.
Laurel motions over to the edge, and you get your first glimpse at the rumored hideout of the Redfist gang. It's a large broken-down building dominating the better portion of a block. You crouch down behind the small wall encircling the roof and scout out the location. Your enhanced eyes work as if it's daylight outside. A couple sentries loiter about, and there doesn't seem to be any civilians nearby. You turn to Laurel and see that she's looking through a small telescope. You figure that it has night-vision capabilities, so she can definitely see what you're seeing. You study what you're seeing again. If infiltration is the ultimate goal, the best option inside would be from up top. Maybe Laurel's zipline would allow you come in from a high enough angle to land on the top floor. You inch next to her, and whisper.
"I think the zipline to the top level would be our best bet at infiltrating without detection. What are your thoughts?"
She pauses to consider a moment, then shakes her head. She grasps at an invisible pocket and pulls out what look to be a small set of earbuds. You wordlessly take them and insert them into your ears.
"Those will prevent your eardrums from taking any damage from my canaries cry. Wouldn't want you becoming deaf so soon after joining the league. But that's not what we're going to do. We're going to fight our way in."
"Wait, what?"
"You heard me, stud. Last mission was a test of your instincts on how you prefer to proceed with a mission. Since you chose to do it stealthily, we at the League want to see how you respond to a frontal ****. Not always will you have the luxury of being able to take your time and use subterfuge. Sometimes, it comes down to who can win in a fight."
"Sounds good to me. What's the best way to conduct an all-out **** on a mildly defended gang holed up in a hotel?"
"Like this." And with that, Laurel takes her bo staff and leaps off the building right in front of the entrance. She lands with a flourish and immediately charges the nearest goon and knocks him out with a hefty whack to the head. She whirls and dodges the shots of the nearest guard, and roundhouses kicks his submachine right out of his hand, scattering into the street.
Well, you suppose it's time for you to make your mark.
How do you fight?
