Amy says 'No'

"You know," Amy said when the three of them had found a place on the sand, "I appreciate you telling me about my mother's offer. And I was tempted to just go along. I mean, you'd end up having to spend most of that money on me anyway, right? But really, you hurt my feelings when you just dumped me on the bus this morning. I know that redhead is cuter than me but if that's how you were going to be, I just didn't want to be part of it."

"I wanted to give you space," Matt protested.

"Keep telling yourself that, Matt. I don't think you're a bad person. I actually kind of like you. But you're too self-centered. You don't think about how other people feel. Or if you do think, you think about it wrong."

He nodded. "I get that."

"And I think it's better that I go back to my old tutor. Having you tutor me would stir up too many feelings."

He nodded again. "I'm sorry, Amy."

"I know." She turned to Karen. "I hope we can still be friends. I know you're always looking out for your brother and me turning him down like this is kind of a kick in the head... something I've had too much experience with. But I had to make this decision. I know it's right for me and it might even be right for Matt but I'll understand if you can't be friends any more."

Karen got up from her towel and walked around to give Amy a hug. "You have to do what you have to do, girlfriend. I've got your back and Matt has your back too, as much as a guy who can't keep his dick in his pants can have."

Amy's chin wobbled. "I think maybe coming to the beach was a bad idea. Can I take you home now?"

Well, shit. That had not gone well.
