Chapter 7 by M2J N7 M2J N7

How do you answer?

Amused Honesty

Jen, Allie and Kathy all instantly glare at her, as if she committed some sort of heresy by daring to bring up the elephant in the room.

Annabeth's rather earnest expression is enough that you don't take offense and her bluntness and obvious open acceptance of your new metahuman state are refreshing in a way you never realised it could be. It was one thing for Jennifer and Kathryn to accept you for who you are, powers and all, as they had both known you your entire life. Annabeth, on the other hand, was a total stranger.

You let out a small laugh of genuine amusement. "Weird."

The other three girls lighten up when they see you aren't even the slightest bit offended by Annabeth's bluntness. Jennifer even speaks up. "How so?"

"Well... For one, I'm smarter than I used to be- which says a lot, because, not to brag, I was pretty smart before. However, where before I was above average and talented, now I'm a genius and gifted and that doesn't even account for being able to move things with my mind," you inform them. "And this whole getting powers thing, is still kinda surreal. It's the kind of thing that happens to other people, yet here I am."

"Can we see?" Annabeth asks with pure excitement in her voice.

You shrug, but can't help but want to put on a show. After all, while all four ladies already knew about you having powers- some longer than others, not one of them had ever seen them in action.

Closing your eyes, you extend your hand towards the kitchen, getting a feel for everything. One day you hope to get to the point where you won't have to concentrate or use gestures to perform a couple of parlor tricks but, for now, you make due.

Slowly, you open a cabinet door. One by one, you start lifting plates arranging them at the kitchen table. You extend your other hand and open the oven, removing the lasgana while simultaneously placing down pot holders on the table and setting the pan down on them very carefully. The whole thing wasn't done as quickly as you wanted, but you didn't want Allie's work to go to waste because you were grandstanding too much.

You are more confident when you mentally lift a second plate, placing a small towelette on it, allowing it to float in midair as the garlic bread seemingly leaps from the cookie sheet they were on and glide upwards in a corkscrew before reaching a crescendo above the plate and placing themselves on it. The girls were all suitably impressed as you heard more than one of them gasp at the sight.

"Big finish," you tell them, eyes still closed, as you wave your hands in the manner of a conductor for an orchestra. The drawer holding the silverware opens and forks and knives began to stand up and dance around, going from the drawer to the counter before doing a schronized flipping routine onto the kitchen table in their proper spots.

When it was all done you slump down slightly and let out a tired breath. Subconsciously, you smile as the girls holler and cheer for you.

"Amazing," Annabeth says in a breathless tone.

"You really have been practicing haven't you," Jennifer asked in amazement. "Do I want to know how many dishes you broke?"

"None. Though Mother and Dad's kitchen table have more than a few gouges in it from where the occasional fork or knife got stuck in it," you tell her. The girls laugh some more. Seeing all of them happy makes you content and you're happy to bask in the moment.
