Ambush

“Stay down,” you whisper to Kylie, slapping her hand away from the wheel. She’s soaking wet, but you can smell the weed on her. Blind driving into gunfire doesn’t seem like a great idea to you, not that you’re a special ops soldier or anything.

You hunch down, fumbling with the gun. You awkwardly push the safety off and hold your breath. The rain is too loud. You can’t hear footsteps approaching… you have to see Olivia to be able to do anything.

Lightning flashes and you see a shadow spilling onto the car.

You pop up with both hands on the gun and your finger on the trigger, hoping that she’s close enough to hit.

It’s not Olivia! It’s Nevaeh, whose eyes go wide. She drops to the ground with a cry.

A gunshot pops in the dark. You see an orange flash and hear the bullet zing off the car. Olivia is off to your left, shockingly close. You swing the gun around and pull the trigger as Olivia does the same. The headrest behind you explodes with fluffy white stuffing, but you see Olivia fall.

Kylie jumps out of the car, and you do the same, trying to hold the gun like you know what you’re doing. Olivia is still moving, but Kylie runs up and kicks the gun out of her hand before she can use it or get up.

You reach her as well, and then Nevaeh joins you. Olivia lies on the ground, both hands on her bleeding stomach. She’s obviously in a lot of pain.

Through the rain, you all hear a groan from Samantha. She’s still alive! Nevaeh rushes over to where she lies near the front door.

You and Kylie stand over Olivia. Kylie bends to pick up Olivia’s gun. It’s all happening too fast. You are having a hard time thinking clearly about anything, but you have to do something… your mind is just blank. The gun is slippery with rainwater. You can’t believe you got her, but even someone like you can hit somebody ten feet away.

Thunder rumbles. The storm is just getting worse.

Kylie points the gun at Olivia, but you reach out and stop her.

“Whoa,” you say. “What are you doing?”

“She tried to kill us! And there’s someone else in there,” Kylie says, glancing at the house. “You saw it.”

“We don’t know what we saw,” you reply. That figure? What was that about? You are so confused.
