Chapter 36

How are Helen and Adam's respective bodies doing?

All seems well

Helen and Adam made the short walk down the street to their own house. Adam shuffled a little nervously, whilst Helen strode purposefully, her heels clicking on the pavement.

They approached the front door and Helen made to reach into her handbag for the keys, but stopped, remembering she didn't have the key anymore. Instead, she rang the bell and waited.

After a few moments, the door opened and Adam's body stood before them, or rather, Clive did. A confused look spread across his face as he saw his own body and his wife's standing before him.

"Oh, erm, hello," he said, uncertainly.

"It's me, Helen," Helen replied, giving him a quick smile. "I've come to check up on things."

Clive didn't respond. He was too busy gawping at the outfit she was wearing, his eyes roaming her body hungrily. Helen looked down at herself, remembering the provocative blouse and tight skirt she had selected earlier that morning. She suppressed a smirk.

"Can we come in?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh, yeah, sorry," Clive mumbled, stepping aside to let them in.

Helen sashayed past him, deliberately brushing up against him. She could feel the heat radiating off his body, the tension in his muscles.

Adam didn't follow her inside. He stood in the doorway, staring at his own body, his eyes narrowed. He scanned himself up and down, his lips pressed together in a thin line.

"Well, you don't seem to have ruined my body," he finally said. "Have you been behaving yourself, Clive?"

"Oh, yes," Clive stammered, his face flushing. "I wouldn't do anything...erm...untoward. But, even... I could say the same to you! You've been in my body!"

Adam was a little taken aback by the vehemence of Clive's response. He was suddenly conscious of how much bigger his own frame was than Clive's.

"Will you two stop arguing and get inside," Helen sighed.

Adam shot one last suspicious glare at his body and then followed Clive and Helen into the living room.

"Where's my body?" Helen asked, looking around the room.

"Oh, she's upstairs," Clive replied, averting his eyes from Helen's cleavage. "Reading a book, I think."

Helen's right eye twitched involuntarily. "I'll go and see her," she said, promptly turning and strutting up the stairs.

Adam and Clive remained standing in the living room. They both moved in parallel to sit down on opposite seats. After a moment, Adam cleared his throat awkwardly.

"So, erm, what exactly have you been up to then?" he asked, keenly watching how Clive reacted.

"Nothing much," Clive replied, trying to appear nonchalant. "Your work isn't exactly exciting, but I've just been getting on with it. And I've been going to the gym a bit."

Adam considered this. If what Helen had told him was true, then Clive wouldn't have done anything that would upset her. That would include anything that would mess up Adam's life surely?

"It's been nice being young again," Clive continued, flexing his muscles a little. "I'd forgotten what it was like to have all this energy. I've been tidying up your garden and the house. You should thank me. I've done a great job!"

"Uh huh," Adam muttered, his gaze still fixed on his body. "So you've been in my young, healthy body and all you've done, aside from my work, is exercise and do gardening?"

Clive shifted uncomfortably in his seat, avoiding eye contact. "Well, I might have done a few other things..."

"What other things?" Adam asked, leaning forward.

"I'm sure it's nothing you wouldn't have done yourself," Clive said, his voice wavering.

Adam narrowed his eyes. "Tell me, Clive."

Clive gulped, his throat suddenly dry. "It was all in the privacy of your home, I assure you," he stammered.

"You've been wanking, haven't you?" Adam chuckled, pleased it didn't seem to be anything more sinister.

"Well that substitute Helen doesn't seem interested," Clive shrugged. "And this body of yours, it's a young, virile man. I've got all this energy and lust. I needed to release it somehow."

"Alright, fair enough," Adam shrugged, leaning back into the chair.

"How about you?" Clive asked. "What have you been up to?"

Adam hesitated. It seemed as though Clive had generally respected the boundaries and parameters of his life, but Adam wasn't sure he had done the same with Clive's. The sudden realisation of this hypocrisy made his face redden and he found himself averting his eyes.

"I've been...well, same as you really," he lied. "You're retired so I haven't had much to do. Just gardening and that."

"I see," Clive murmured, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "And you're ok with being me? A middle-aged man?"

Adam open and closed his mouth, unable to form a response. He was saved from answering by the arrival of Helen, still in Donna's body, clutching the spellbook.

"How are you boys getting along?" she asked, her tone playful.

"Fine," Adam replied, his mind still mulling over Clive's question.

"Well, I'm happy with how the substitute soul is handling things here," Helen announced, looking directly at Clive. "And I'm grateful you've behaved yourself, Clive. Adam, are you satisfied too?"

Adam sat for a moment, chewing his lip. He looked away from his girlfriend in her borrowed body and across at Clive in his.

What does Adam say?
