Who are you?

Alex Quinn

Chapter 2 by pmanpman

You're hauling your last duffel bag up the worn stone steps of Thornwood Hall when you spot the room number—317. The door's already ajar, and inside you can hear someone humming something melodic and unfamiliar.

Pushing the door open, you step into a surprisingly spacious dorm room with two beds, two desks, and a shared bathroom visible through another door. Standing by the window is your roommate—a young woman with distinctly lupine features. She's maybe five-foot-six, with thick russet fur covering her arms and legs, pointed ears that swivel toward you as you enter, and amber eyes that catch the morning light. Her tail—bushy and expressive—wags slightly as she turns.

"Oh! You must be Alex!" She bounds over with surprising energy, wearing a simple tank top and shorts that accommodate her digitigrade legs. "I'm Petra Thornscale. They told me I'd be rooming with the human freshman. This is so cool—I've never met a human before!"

Her enthusiasm is infectious, though you notice her nose twitching as she gets closer, clearly catching your scent. "Sorry, is this weird? I promise I'm not usually this forward, but you just smell really... interesting. Unique, I mean. In a good way!"

She steps back, ears flattening slightly in embarrassment. "Right, orientation. We should probably head down soon—it starts at ten, and Dean Shadowmere doesn't like latecomers."

The walk to the Great Hall is enlightening. The campus is stunning—modern buildings blend seamlessly with older Gothic structures, and everywhere you look there are students of bewildering variety. A group of diminutive goblins cluster around a vending machine, their green skin gleaming. Two statuesque women with bat-like wings and horns—succubi, you realize—lounge on a bench in matching crop tops and nothing else, their tails coiling lazily. A merfolk student propels himself past in a specialized wheelchair, his scaled lower body shimmering iridescent blue.

Petra waves at several passing students, and you notice the stares you're attracting. Not hostile, but intensely curious. Hungry, almost.

"Here we are," Petra says as you reach the massive doors of the Great Hall.

Inside, hundreds of students fill the tiered seating. You scan the crowd as Petra leads you to seats near the middle. You see elves with impossibly beautiful features, more werewolves like Petra, creatures you can't even begin to identify—and not a single other human face.

The realization hits you fully: you really are the only human freshman this year.

A hush falls as the lights dim. On the stage, a figure materializes from shadow itself—Dean Shadowmere, a demon with slate-gray skin, curved horns, and eyes like burning coals. She's dressed in an impeccably tailored suit that does nothing to hide her otherworldly nature.

"Welcome, students, to Mythaven University," her voice carries effortlessly through the hall, rich and commanding. "You are the future of our integrated society. Here, you will learn not just from books, but from each other. We celebrate our differences and embrace the beautiful complexity of our diverse species."

Her gaze sweeps across the audience and seems to linger on you for just a moment.

"We have one human freshman this year—a rarity that makes this class special. I expect you all to make our human student feel welcome and to respect the principles of consent and mutual understanding that are the foundation of this institution."

You feel hundreds of eyes turn toward you, and Petra gives you an encouraging nudge.

"Your time here will transform you," the Dean continues, and you swear there's a subtle emphasis on that word. "You will leave Mythaven as better versions of yourselves, shaped by knowledge, experience, and the connections you forge. Embrace every opportunity. Now, let's review your schedules..."

She outlines the first day: an introductory class on Mythkin Culture at 2pm, followed by a Cross-Species Freshman Mixer tonight at seven.

As the speech concludes and students begin filing out, you notice several groups lingering, their attention fixed on you with unmistakable interest.
