Chapter 2
by Kainen
Let us see the names of those who are the next steps in the evolutionary ladder:
Aidan Vahlen (21 years old, College Freshman, Telekinesis)
Aidan knew this was a stupid idea. Completely irrational. His mother would be completely aghast at him for this, every scientific and parenting instinct screaming at her that this was not the way to fully test himself.
She’d always encouraged him to push his limits, find where his strengths lay. But that had been when he was still debating what subjects he enjoyed in high school, what kind of friends he was interested in making.
But then again, he argued to himself, she had left him her notes on what she’d been doing. Trusted him with the truth of what she’d done to him in a way she hadn’t even her own sister.
Aunt Siobhan.
His aunt who’d managed to take care of his mother in her own apartment, work herself to the bone just to be able to find a nurse to occasionally come by and look after his mother even as her already limited personal life dwindled to just him and her sister’s comatose body.
She’d be so angry too if she knew what he was doing.
This wasn’t the right thing to do he knew. But this might be his only chance. Call it serendipity, call it chance, call it a dancing tango of strange. But it was something that had fallen right into his lap.
He braced himself as the car headlights flared and the engine echoed in the alleyway, carrying the tons of metal toward him at terminal speed. He took a deep breath, eyes closed and remaining so even as it came closer.
Those same eyes flashed open, the part of his mind his mother had carefully created in him and he himself had now spent years cultivating flared to life as veins of mauve so thin they were neigh invisible without a microscope spread through his eyes radiating outward from his iris to signify his intent.
A screeching crash, a shattering of glass, and the path forward was chosen.
This very much sounds like an In Media Res opening. What all actually lead to this?

The Advent
Or: How A Mother's Love Can Change Everything
Your mother was a brilliant scientist and a pioneer in genetic research. She spent years subtly testing and refining her theories and their practical applications using the one subject she knew better than any other: you. She tested and tested until one day something would happen that forcibly jump started the alterations she'd made and made you something more: the first step in humanity's next great evolution. Chronicle the reverberations as you stride toward your new tomorrow.
