Chapter 25 by Torg Torg

What's next?

After the bats

After the bat swarm passes, you all take a moment to catch your breath and regroup. Nell holds the torch up high again, casting flickering light across the cavern walls.

"Well, this place certainly keeps you on your toes," Jon remarks laughing nervously. He glances around warily expecting another threat to emerge from the shadows.

"No kidding," Adi grumbles, brushing bat guano off his leather armor. "Let's just get through here as quickly as we can."

You nod in agreement, eager to be out of these claustrophobic caverns. "Stay alert. We don't know what else might be lurking down here."

With cautious steps, you lead the group deeper into the glowing cave. The strange mosses cling to the damp rocks, lighting your path with an eerie blue-green luminescence. You pass through several small wider areas connected by narrow paths.

After one particularly narrow path, you find a wider room with a passage out the back. Having seen most of the larger cavern, the party decides to exit through this passage.

After about 100 feet of winding passage, the cavern opens into a larger space. You halt abruptly at the sight before you. A gaping abyss plunges into infinite darkness, spanning the entire cave. On the other side, you can make out the faint glow of another tunnel entrance. A rickety rope bridge stretches over the chasm, swaying gently. You gulp. It doesn't look very sturdy at all.

"I suppose we'll have to cross that bridge," you say.

You stare into the dark abyss, the rickety rope bridge swaying gently over it. This will not be an easy crossing.

"We have **** but to cross," you say with resolve. "Test your footing and use the ropes to steady yourself. We'll go one at a time."

Nell volunteers to go first, always one to take the lead. Torch in one hand, he steps cautiously onto the bridge. The ropes creak under his weight as he slowly crosses, disappearing momentarily into the darkness halfway before emerging into the dim light on the other side.

"All good!" he calls back. The bridge held for him at least.

Adi goes next, moving quicker than Nell but with no less care. You watch nervously as the bridge sways and dips under his steps, but soon he akes it safely across.

You take a deep breath to gather your courage before stepping onto the weathered planks. Don't look down, you tell yourself. The ropes are rough under your sweaty palms. Concentrate on each movement. You focus on putting one foot in front of the other, trying to block out the creaks of the bridge and the yawning void below.

After what feels like an eternity, you reach the other side. Jon brings up the rear, making it across without incident. You breathe a sigh of relief when you are together again on solid ground.

"Let's hope we don't have to cross over that thing again," Adi remarks.
