Chapter 10

How does Adam's conversation go?

Adam speaks to Clive and Donna

Not wanting to make a beeline for them, Adam instead chose to make a show of approaching the bar to return his glass but stopping to say hello to Clive and Donna as if seeing them for the first time.

"Hello Clive, Donna, how are you both?" Adam said self-consciously smiling.

"Oh, hello Adam," Clive said looking up from his almost finished pint. "We're good thanks. Just here after a day of looking after our grandson. Managed to sneak away from Helen for a cheeky Sunday pint?"

"She's actually feeling a little under the weather at the moment," Adam quickly lied, not wanting to seem like he was the sort to leave his girlfriend alone on a Sunday evening and drink in the pub alone. "A bit of a migraine. I tried to be quiet trying not to disturb her but didn't manage that well. It was actually her idea for me to come to the pub so she can have some peace and rest."

"That is sweet of you, Adam," Donna cooed, brushing his arm gently. Adam's heart skipped a beat at the touch. Was that something she'd normally do or was Helen at the wheel?

"How about I get you another pint for being such a good boyfriend?" Clive chuckled, getting up from his chair.

"Oh, shouldn't I be getting you two drinks," Adam said, moving to get up too. "I owe you one after you helped me fix the garage door. I'd have taken ages if it wasn't for your help."

"Not at all, that's what neighbours are for," Clive said. "What would you like?"

"A pint of Rusty's stout would be great, cheers Clive."

"I'll have another gin and tonic, love," Donna said before she finished off her current drink.

As Clive moved to the bar, Adam's mind raced. He had to think of a way he could try and figure out if Helen had possessed Donna, whilst also not acting too bizarrely to upset her if it was really Donna. Clive's back was to them and the pub was loud enough that he wouldn't be able to make out their conversation. Adam briefly considered just asking the favourite colour question. If it wasn't Helen he could pass it off as a silly question to get to know his neighbour, if it was Helen he'd have already won. Instead, Adam decided to be a bit brave and charm Donna a little.

"I like your skirt, Donna, I think Helen has something similar."

"Aww, thank you Adam," Donna gushed. Again she touched his arm, though this time she let her fingers linger and stroke down to his hand before moving them away. "It's good to know I'm wearing something that young and trendy people like your girlfriend might wear."

That had to be Helen, Adam thought. He didn't know Donna well enough to negate the fact that she could be flirtatious, but she really hammed up the compliment for Helen. Adam would have pressed further but Clive had returned with their drinks.

The three neighbours settled into a normal conversation covering light hearted topics unlikely to offend. Adam thought about steering the conversation to something that might reveal Helen to be in possession of Donna's body, but felt that would be too risky. Surely Clive would catch wind of something being off. Instead, Adam happily chatted about the weather, local events and their respective families.

As the conversation wore on, Adam did notice that Donna (or surely Helen) was becoming less and less involved. She would chip in here and there with a nod or a few words, but was otherwise glancing at Adam or sipping her G&T. Adam thought about bringing Donna back into the conversation but was distracted by a gentle stroking sensation on his left leg. Not wanting to cause a scene, he leaned back to look under the table. To his surprise (and delight) Donna's nylon covered foot was working its way up and down his calf.

Trying his best to mask his arousal, Adam leaned forward again and continued to listen to Clive's lecture about alternative gardening techniques. Unquestionably, Helen was inside Donna's body, but how was he going to naturally separate her away from Clive without causing suspicion? And how on earth was he meant to act normally whilst a verifiable GILF was playing footsie with him under her husband's nose? Donna's sharp green eyes glimmered at Adam as his face turned beet red. Increasingly her foot was working its way higher until it eventually rested on Adam's chair, between his legs. He could take it no longer.

"What's your favourite colour, Donna?" Adam blurted out, cutting Clive off mid sentence.

"Why it's violet my love!" Donna announced smugly, retracting her foot.

A massive wave of relief crashed over Adam which was followed almost immediately by panic as he saw the puzzled expression on Clive's face. His brain was totally empty of believable explanations for his strange question. Thankfully the silence was broken by Donna's calm voice.

"Clive, why don't you go home and get the dinner started? I'll keep Adam company for a bit and I'll see you later." If Adam didn't have suspicions that Helen was operating Donna's body, he would have missed the commanding nature to her tone. It wasn't a question or suggestion, but an order that had to be followed.

"Of course dear," Clive said robotically. His expression went blank and he got up from his seat in a steady motion. Without saying goodbye, he left the pub.

Adam's mouthed dropped open in amazement. That had to be a spell of some kind! That must have been what Helen had hinted at when she'd said she might be using more magic at the pub. Before Adam could interrogate his girlfriend about this development, 'Donna' was gently shaking her empty glass in front of her.

"Looks like I need another drink. Why don't you get us another round and we can talk properly," she said with a wink.

What happens next now Adam and Helen are alone?
