Chapter 17

Who is at the door?

Adam and another man are at the door

Helen saw Adam walking down the driveway, but at the door was a man in a high-visibility jacket that she didn't recognise. Frustrated that she wouldn't get to greet her boyfriend in the way she wanted, Helen quickly threw on the largest dressing gown she had to cover up the fact she was wearing lingerie. She also slid her feet into fluffy pink slippers before she left the bedroom.

As Helen entered the landing she could hear that Adam had opened the door and let the man into the house. 'Who the fuck is he letting in?' Helen thought, beginning to fume with rage. Her internal question was answered as she heard the conversation between Adam and the man downstairs.

"It's just under the stairs, mate," came Adam's voice. "You should find both the gas and the electricity meter at the back of the cupboard.

"It's just the gas meter I need to take a look at thanks," the man said as Helen heard the cupboard under the stairs being opened.

Pacing back and forth in frustration, Helen found herself being drawn towards the office room where the spellbook lay. Thoughts of a spell that turned the man into a frog or to dust crossed her mind. 'No,' Helen thought, 'the company would wonder why he didn't report back and he probably has a family. He'll go soon and then I can come downstairs and surprise Adam.'

"Would you like a cup of tea?" came Adam's voice from the kitchen. Helen almost shouted out in anger at her boyfriend's ridiculous suggestion to the man. That would keep him here longer and she wanted him gone! Before the man could answer, Helen tried to send instructions to his mind that he didn't want a tea and needed to be getting on.

"A tea would be great thanks," the man responded.

"No!" Helen cried out loud, unable to contain herself anymore. She stomped down the stairs and scowled at the gas meter checker, whatever, man as she reached the ground floor's hallway. It seemed as though the Trojan thoughts spell wouldn't work unless she could see her target. The frightened man turned to face the very angry amateur witch as her eyes trapped him in her gaze.

"Oh, I don't want a tea and I have finished with the meter," the man said robotically, picking up his things. "Goodbye."

Helen helped to guide the man out the front door, closing it very firmly behind him. She wheeled round to face Adam who stood at the kitchen doorway with a bemused look on his face. Helen could feel a vein bulging on her forehead as she stared her boyfriend down.

"What the bloody hell was that?" Helen asked just about keeping her voice down.

"I was making tea and thought it'd be rude not to offer him one," Adam explained meekly. "Hello love, by the way, I didn't know you were here."

Helen's anger subsided seeing her boyfriend's shock and hearing his reasoning. "It's fine, I just wanted to surprise you."

"O-oh!" Adam stuttered. "You look beautiful!" he finally said, apparently noticing Helen's makeup.

Helen smiled at the compliment. She was calm now and ready to present Adam with his surprise. "Thank you sweetie," Helen purred. "Why don't you sit down on one of the stools in the kitchen? I've got something to show you."

Adam dutifully obliged Helen's request and sat on one of the high stools at the breakfast bar in the kitchen. Helen sauntered in behind him, playing with the belt that tied up around her dressing gown. She delighted in playing with the belt before unfastening it and allowing the whole robe to fall to the floor.

"Ta-da!" Helen said, throwing her arms into the air and cocking her hip out. "What do you think?"

How does Adam respond?
