Academics were the measure of how smart you were. As soon as humanity had escaped the state of nature, all that mattered was advancing their intelligence. It was what could build empires.

Simply put, you couldn’t do things if you didn’t first know what they were or how to do them.

Academics were society’s ways of quantifying ones intelligence. It literally boiled down how smart you were and presented it as a matter of fact statement.
