About my sister...

I took in a deep breathe before exhaling and recalling all the memories I had with Andrea before. “So you want to know about my sister huh?” Both Gabi and Ivan nodded, being silent and patiently waiting for more. Well, if I’m gunna be close with them, and Gabi shared her own secrets so might as well.

“Andrea is younger than me by two years, we grew up in a cramped house and had to share the bed for the longest time. I think like up to our later teenage years we had to sleep together, it was pretty tight and not much wiggle room.” Gabi giggled at my statement. “What?” “You just said you slept with your sister haha.” I frowned. “Not in that-nevermind.”

“Anyways, she was younger so she was the family favorite and boy did she know it. Anything she did wrong she would get away with, putting on a cute face and saying she didn’t know better. And they would buy it, Mom and dad, but not with me. They were way more strict towards me of course, I was the oldest so I had to set an example. Only I don’t think she needed one, she was better than me at a lot of things. Sports, school, homework, friends, popularity, you name it. There wasn’t a single thing she could achieve and I hated it, I was happy for her but once we landed in the same classes it became a problem. Now I’m being compared to at school just as much as I was at home, my teachers would frown upon me, my classmates would tease me constantly and unlike her I had a few bullies on my ass for a year or two.”

“Finally, one day I decided to try real hard to get an A on a test. Boy did I study, study study study study. I’m no bookworm but I put my heart and soul into that project of mine, I wanted to prove everyone wrong and show them I could do it too if I wanted. Test day comes up, she’s one of the first to finish and this time I’m not far behind, so I’m feeling good about myself and I’m smiling and I’m relaxed and I know I got it in the bag. I ended up with a D plus, barely passing. No idea how, I was so certain I had it right but I was wrong. She passed it with an A, of course. Didn’t study nearly as hard as I did.”

“So I said fuck it and just stopped trying, wasn’t working for me anyhow. So I slacked off, I started making jokes, started breaking rules because it was fun. Parents have no idea what to do, school has no idea what to do, I didn’t much care. But yea, Andrea. She’s like the golden child, spoiled and protected and with the good grades and all the friends in the world. Now that I’m gone, they’re all probably better off.”

Gabs and Ivan stood quiet after I finished, looking down at the ground before looking at each other. “You know,” Gabi started, “It kind of sounds like you were jealous about the attention she got.” I frowned. “Not that that’s anything bad, I’m just saying that when you look at the message she sent you before, it sounds like she misses you.” “Actually it sounds like you two get along well according to her.” Ivan added, pointing at my phone. “You know, things aren’t always black and white. She has her own side too, and so far she seems to care about you. I don’t know her myself so I’m just specalating...specolating?” “Speculating.” Gabi corrected him. “Right, thanks. But I mean I’m sorry it was awful for you. I understand how that could feel, maybe if things were different... but look at the good side of things. If you didn’t move, I wouldn’t have met you.” He smiled, holding my hand. “Right, same goes for me too. We wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for that, as weird as that sounds haha.” Gabi added, holding my other hand.

I smiled, if only I had them with me in my last school things would have been very different. “Thanks you guys haha.” Ivan leaned in and hugged me warmly. “Anytime you feel down or upset you have me now okay? Just come to my bed and I’ll make you feel so much better.” He added with a wink before kissing me and sitting back to his seat as Gabi laughed. “And you have my number too so, yea. You have us Alex.”
