Chapter 13 by Alcaeus Alcaeus

What Does She Do?

Abduct the Little Sister

Taking a deep breath, I approached the crying girl from behind. My mission was to rescue twenty-one "little sisters". That was a lot. Who knows if I'll even be able to find that many! Besides, I couldn't just leave her here, not after I... she won't have anyone to protect her from the Splicers. This was for the best.

So I grabbed her and- she started screaming and thrashing.

"Woah! Listen, I- Jesus Christ," she nearly impaled me with her giant needle! Trying to rend it from her hands without dropping her, I shouted, "I'm not going to hurt you! I just- fuck, calm down!"

"Let go off me!" Her voice echoed oddly as I carried her into the tunnel, ignoring the sea floor and towering buildings visible through the glass. She twisted and yanked, trying to get out of my grip. I gritted my teeth, unwilling to let her go.

I was so focused on that, I was completely caught off guard when the tail end of a plane crashed into the tunnel behind them, its jagged edges tearing through the structure like a can opener. Water surged in, a roaring torrent that swept debris and drowned the distant cries of the doomed. The Little Sister and I froze.

Then I bolted.

Running through the tunnel, which was much easier now that the Little Sister wasn't fighting me, I turned a corner, and my eyes widened as an explosion rocked another tunnel. It sunk into the deep.

Continuing down the tunnel, the first door on my left groaned under the pressure, its edges bent outward, rivulets of water seeping through the cracks. Shit. It was only a matter of seconds before it gave way entirely! Boots splashing through shallow pools, we reached the door at the tunnel’s end. It immediately hissed open, revealing another art deco style room. The door quickly shut behind me, leaving only the entrance wet.

To the right were a small set of steps that led to a partially flooded lounge area. There was a large glass window with a crack in it that water was leaking from onto… a dead body. A man slumped against the wall, his face frozen in a grimace of pain. In front of him, a syringe glimmered faintly in the dim light. The vial of blue liquid had rolled a few feet away, its glow stark against the murky water.

It was like a color swapped version of the ADAM I found.

“Aww, it's an empty angel,” the Little Sister said softly. She stared at the body with wide, unblinking eyes. What did she mean by ‘empty’? How did the Little Sisters see these people?

I didn't have time to ask. My bugs—those she still had clinging to her and spread out in the next room—picked up movement. Fast, deliberate.

The splicer. The one from before that killed that Johnny guy. And another one, slower, carrying a pipe.

Looking down at the Little Sister in my arms, I pulled her closer, and commanded my bugs to attack. I wasn't about to give them a chance to hurt her.

The room exploded into chaos as my swarm descended. The fast splicer barely had time to react before thousands of insects swarmed her face, slipping into his mouth and nose. Her muffled screams filled the room as she clawed at her own skin, stumbling backward into the shallow water. I sent another wave toward the slower splicer, his pipe raised mid-swing. The bugs crawled up his arms and into his clothing, biting and stinging until he dropped the weapon and fell, thrashing, into the flooded lounge.

The third splicer, waiting by the airlock, was even less prepared when the door finally opened and part of the swarm I had waiting began harassing him. His cries joined the others until, one by one, they went silent.

When the room fell silent, I surveyed the aftermath. My hands trembled as I set the Little Sister down, who watched the scene with an almost detached curiosity. Then she clapped her hands together, her face lighting up with glee.

“You brought me so many angels!” she cheered, her voice echoing eerily in the quiet room. Before I could respond, she skipped over to the fast splicer’s body. My stomach turned as she plunged her needle into his chest, humming a haunting little tune as she worked.

My mouth fell open as she began extracting blood from them.

"W-what are you doing?"

She looked back at me and tilted her head. Then, like it was the most obvious thing, she said, "I'm getting the ADAM."

Staring at her, I...

Stop Her?
