Chapter 41 by zankoo zankoo

What's next?

Abbie and Jake arrive at the steakhouse

As the elevator ascended, Abbie felt a flutter of excitement in her stomach. She couldn't wait to see the view from the top of the hotel. She had heard that it was breathtaking, with a panoramic vista of the city's skyline.

Jake leaned over and whispered in her ear, "You look gorgeous tonight." Abbie felt a blush rise in her cheeks. She suddenly felt the contact of her sleek black dress against her skin, and as she breathed, she could feel the material rippling against her.

When they reached the top floor, the elevator doors opened to reveal the lavish and ornate entryway of Beija Flor, the Brazilian steakhouse. The restaurant was decorated in a warm and inviting style, with dark wood floors and walls, and rich red and gold accents. The tables were covered in white linens, and there were fresh flowers in every corner. Abbie lit up when she walked in -- it was such a fun place, and way more exciting than any restaurant she'd typically take herself to.

"Jake, this place looks amazing!" she exclaimed.

Jake smiled. This whole weekend was such a bizarre mystery to him, and he had no idea what parts of it would be good, bad, successful, horrifying, and so on. Every small victory was a victory. "Yeah, it seems pretty cool."

"Pretty cool? Look at this architecture. And the artwork -- I think those are Candido Portinari paintings over there. He was kind of a big deal in the 1950s." This was a different side of Abbie. She had a love for art history, and occasionally tried (and succeeded) at incorporating it into some of her public relations work.

Jake approached the host at the door, gave his name, and they were then ushered to a table, which was positioned next to a floor-to-ceiling window that offered a stunning view of the city. Jake muttered something about wine, and after he and Abbie were seated and given menus, the host disappeared.

"I am just blown away by this menu, too!" Abbie was ecstatic, and Jake was thoroughly amused watching her.

"I've never seen someone so excited about a menu." Jake didn't know as much about the artwork, but he was definitely interested in the food.

Abbie was a bit of a foodie, and she loved to try new things. She was also very curious about Jake's taste in food. So, as they were looking over the menu, she asked him about a few different things.

"Have you tried the feijoada before?" she asked.

Jake shook his head. "No, I haven't," he said. "What is it?"

"It's a traditional Brazilian black bean stew," Abbie explained. "It's really delicious."

"Hmm, it sounds good," Jake said. "I might have to try it."

Abbie also asked Jake about the churrasco. "What's the churrasco?" she asked.

"It's a Brazilian dish of grilled meats," Jake explained. "I think it's really popular here."

"That sounds good too," Abbie said. "I'm not sure what to get."

"Why don't we share a few things?" Jake suggested. "That way, we can try a little bit of everything."

He read through the menu, and while they were perusing, the sommelier arrived with a bottle of wine. She held it out for Jake to examine, poured a bit for him to taste, and with his approval, poured two glasses.

After the sommelier left, Abbie whispered, "what did you get? I am pretty ignorant about wine."

Jake looked around to make sure no one was watching, and then whispered back, "me too." He chuckled. "I just picked one that looked kind of easy to pronounce."

Abbie raised her glass. "Cheers. To us."

Jake clinked his glass against hers. "To us."
