ALICE Ch 399

Police and EMTs swarm.

Only Aki maintains any semblance of dignity. Still on her feet and looking quite rugged in her rumpled navy slacks and bloodstained white blouse, she calmly speaks Japanese, no doubt saying exactly what should be said under the circumstances.

Ingrid cries out in alarm when Julieta breaks free from the EMT trying to treat her and yanks Ingrid’s sweater open. She plunges her hand into Ingrid’s cleavage and jerks the key out from within, then stumbles into the bathroom and slams the door.

Lotte sits beside Glynda on the floor at the other end of the room. An EMT is dressing Glynda’s leg, and Lotte allows another one to dab something on her battered face.

Stoically quiet, but looking none too pleased, Adella’s being carried out on a stretcher while Riley limps after her, sounding cheerful as ever between winces. “And we don’t have to worry about Glynda finding out we were in a brawl because she was in the brawl too!”

Irina is being treated in the center of the room. The amazons have already been taken away.

“What in the world is going on?” Lora asks. She holds Bianca’s arm, and Kylie holds Aria’s as they approach the hotel. The whole situation has changed: instead of a promotional celebration, now it’s all emergency vehicles.

“Dunno,” Kylie replies. The Italians speak to each other rapidly. Bianca gets her phone out. “Colby!”

Meri and Colby are with some other onlookers; it looks like they were on a date as well. None of them were invited to the big party.

“Oh, hey!” Meri spots them and waves, bringing Colby over.

“What happened?” Lora asks.

Colby just shrugs. “I don’t know. But someone broke Kojima’s elbow and stole his car.”

Bright stars shine on the simple bench.

Alice isn’t really built to provide warmth, but she keeps her arm around Faye regardless. Faye clings to her, although the worst of her meltdown is behind her.

Alice frowns at the wreckage as the ambulance approaches. “I wonder what the fuck was going on tonight,” she muses.

Faye sniffles and nods.

“That was a pretty cool car though,” Alice says finally.

Faye looks up tearfully. “That’s the panda Eight Six from Initial D.”

“The what from the what? Baby, don’t talk. You aren’t making sense. You probably have a concussion.” Alice leans over and kisses the top of her head. “You’ll be OK. I’ve had concussions before. Man, I can hear Glynda now. Tire management, Alice. Tire management. Fuck you, Glynda. You know she’d be saying it with a Y, too. I think Irina wanted to disappear you to Russia so she could make me and your mom do what she says.”

Faye shudders.

“I know, right? Do they even have anime and sex toys in Russia?” Alice sighs, then winces. “I should’ve brought those pills. Or maybe not. I think there’s cops coming. Is oxy legal in Japan? Man, I thought things were looking good there for a second when it looked like we were gonna do porn, but Irina didn’t want to do porn.”

Faye looks puzzled.

Alice shakes her head. “That’s what I said. You know your mom doesn’t know about Blacked? Or does she just watch cartoon porn like you? That would explain a lot, actually. OK, I better deal with this.” The first of the police cars reaches the bottom of the hill. Alice gets up and raises her hands.

“Guys, it’s cool. I know I’m probably in trouble. I’ll come quietly. Please don’t shoot me because I’m a foreigner.”

Policemen emerge from the cars, and there are some words in Japanese. Alice smiles in disbelief and looks over her shoulder at Faye. “Babe! They didn’t even draw their guns. This country fucking rules! Whoa!” Alice squawks as they handcuff her. “Oh my god! They’re so gentle! No! My back! Ow! I’m injured! Watch the back!”
