What's next?
A woman approaches and is led into the alley
Date: Friday, July 25th
Status: ~1h since CLAIM DAY Transmission
Time: 19:10 - 19:20
Location: Urban District, near Brennan's Apartment
The silence of the intersection was broken by the frantic, uneven slap of high heels against concrete. From the opposite cross-street, a young woman stumbled into the amber pool of the streetlamp. She was dressed in business casual attire - a rumpled gray pencil skirt and a white blouse - and she was clutching a dead smartphone to her chest like a protective talisman. Her face was pale, her eyes darting wildly at the shadows.

Alex and Jen remained perfectly still behind the rusted chassis of the delivery van, thirty feet away, their eyes fixed on the unfolding scene.
The female police officer, who had spent the last five minutes looking bored and impatient, instantly snapped to attention. The transformation was chillingly seamless. The lazy posture vanished, replaced by a picture of calm, authoritative reassurance. She raised her hand, stepping toward the panicked woman with a warm, empathetic smile.
"Easy there, miss. Come into the light," the officer called out, her voice a steady, comforting baritone that carried clearly down the quiet street. "I am Officer Alexandra Miller. You look like you've had a rough commute. It's okay, you are safe now."
The woman stopped, letting out a ragged sob of pure relief at the sight of the uniform. She practically collapsed forward, closing the distance between them. "Officer... thank God. My phone went dead, and there are people fighting a few blocks over... it's like a riot started out of nowhere."
"I know, sweetheart, I know," Miller said softly, reaching out to place a reassuring hand on the woman's shoulder. She didn't draw her close; she kept a professional distance, playing the role perfectly. "It is a coordinated cyber-attack. We are getting civilians off the streets and establishing safe zones until the Guard arrives."
"Can you help me get home? I live just across the bridge," the woman pleaded, her voice shaking.
Miller shook her head, her expression shifting into one of grim, practiced empathy. "I'm sorry, but we can't authorize pedestrian movement right now. The bridge is a chokepoint. But you are in luck. My transport team is right here."
Miller turned, gesturing gracefully toward the deep, impenetrable shadows of the narrow alleyway behind her. "We have a secured van just down this alley, processing civilians for the main hub. Let's get your name on the manifest, and we'll get you somewhere safe."
The woman hesitated for a fraction of a second, peering into the dark gap between the brick buildings. "In the alley?"
"Standard operational security," Miller replied smoothly, her tone leaving no room for argument. She offered another warm, encouraging smile. "We keep the vehicles out of sight to avoid drawing a panic crowd. Come on, I will walk you right to the doors."
The woman nodded, her relief overriding her brief flash of instinct. She let Officer Miller guide her by the shoulder, the two women turning away from the streetlamp and stepping over the threshold into the pitch-black shadows of the alley. Within seconds, the darkness swallowed them completely.
Behind the rusted delivery van, Jen let out a shaky breath, her fingers tightening their grip on Alex's sleeve until he could feel her nails through his shirt.
"You were right," Jen whispered, her voice barely audible, laced with a new, profound dread. She didn't take her eyes off the mouth of the alley. "That was... that was so sketchy, Alex. She didn't call it in. She didn't check for injuries. She just funneled her straight into the dark. It looked rehearsed."
"It was a trap," Alex confirmed, the cold realization settling heavy in his gut. The puzzle pieces locked into place with terrifying clarity. "She isn't holding a perimeter. She's a lure. She's standing out here in uniform to catch stragglers and feed them into whatever is waiting in that van."
Jen pulled back, her eyes wide. "We have to get out of here. We have to go to Brennan's right now."
Alex looked back toward the brick entrance of his friend's building, just a short sprint away, and then back to the gaping, dark mouth of the alley. His protective instincts were screaming at him to turn around and get Jen behind a locked door immediately. But his analytical mind, the part of him that needed to understand the mechanics of a problem before solving it, gnawed at him.
He had seen Daniel claim Chloe in the heat of a pre-existing dynamic. He had seen the chaos on the quad. But if a police officer was actively and systematically luring women into a trap, it meant this wasn't just random ****. It was organized. And if he was going to navigate this new world, he needed to know exactly what he was up against.
