Chapter 13 by Cantalope Cantalope

Where does the waterfall cave lead?

A tunnel network.

"Fuck-fuck-fuck-" Lara felt like this island was giving her turrets. She managed to squeeze through the bend near the cave entrance and the tunnel opened up enough for her to crawl quickly without bumping her elbows on the walls. She could still hear the barking and snapping behind her but it receded the farther she made it down the tunnel. Apparently the wolves weren't hungry enough to follow her underground.

"Thank God." It would have been fairly one-sided if they had, Lara wasn't even wearing shoes. "Shit." Her clothes. Now that the fear of imminent **** had subsided Lara became acutely aware of the rough earth scratching at her knees and sides. "Please let there be another way out..."

After a minute or two of scrabbling in the dark, Lara was starting to panic. She just seemed to be going farther and farther into the earth, if she didn't find something soon she'd have to turn around and hope the wolves had gotten bored...and there was something very strange about this cave. She should have been freezing but the air and even the ground around her was weirdly warm. There was the strangest ribbing on the ground and walls, it scratched mercilessly at her hands and knees. Almost like claw mar-"Waah!"

She tumbled head over heels as the passage suddenly opened into a larger tunnel. Slowly standing up, Lara found she had to raise her arms to touch the ceiling. "Well that's something..." Feeling around she realized she was standing at some kind of nexus, tunnels branching out on all sides. "Like a rabbit warren..." Unbidden, an image of a giant bunny popped into her mind and she snorted at the absurdity.

But the more she thought about it the more she realized that these caves couldn't be natural... The ribbing she'd noticed earlier was definitely gouges made by something digging. Someone, or something, had carved these tunnels out of the earth. Something big. She swallowed hard. It was absolutely dark and the silence was deafening. Careful not to lose her sense of direction, she felt around the open space for the tunnels available...

To her left a smooth tunnel sloped gently downwards and a thin trickle of water dribbled down it. Water has to go somewhere...besides, her battered feet were killing her from walking on the rough stone.

Following the water, she found a tunnel almost directly above her slanting steeply upwards. She doubted she could climb it, especially with the water making it slippery, but it lead almost straight up...and water had to come from somewhere too.

The tunnel to her right had a musky smell she couldn't quite place and the ground seemed more earthy, neither particularly comforting...but a faint breeze whispered out of it.

Directly in front of her was an opening that looked almost like a continuation of the tunnel she crawled out of. Her hand caught in something as she felt over the entrance, it felt like spiderweb but...stronger. This tunnel would probably be a bad choice...

Does she turn around or pick a tunnel?
