A trial of finesse, Skyler's unexpected hiccup

After resting at the Shaolin Temple, Lei-Fei led Skyler outback to a small pond filled with a reasonable amount of fish. "Your task will be two fold. First you are to focus your chi into the tip of your pointer finger. With that same finger you must lure one fish to the surface of the water. Second, you are to overload only its nervous system with your chi without touching it or the water. If any other fish have their nervous systems overloaded. You will have failed this task and must try again." Lei-Fei knelt down in front of the pond to demonstrate this. "Watch and learn." Skyler sat down beside him to watch carefully.

Lei-Fei lifted his right hand's pointer finger, drawing his chi into the tip of it, causing it to glow dimly. So much so, that if Skyler hadn't been watching Lei-Fei's finger closely, he wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. Lei-Fei lowered his pointer finger close to the water, about an inch away from its surface and slowly rotated it by its knuckle slowly. After five seconds of doing this, a small fish drew close to the surface of the water. A small spark leapt from his finger, shocking the small fish, stunning it on the spot. Much to Skyler's surprise, none of the other fish were affected.

Lei-Fei looked to Skyler and bowed his head slightly. "Once you've completed this task. Your lesson will be complete." He stood up before continuing to speak. "You'll need balance, finesse, and patience to accomplish this task. This may take some time to achieve. I will be awaiting the good news inside. Good luck, Skyler." Skyler nodded as Lei-Fei walked towards the temple and soon inside. Skyler looked to his right pointer finger and let out a slow breath before focusing chi into his fingertip. However, unlike what he saw. His own fingertip began glowing brightly.

Skyler's eyes widened, allowing more light into his eyes. Reacting without thinking, he covered his own eyes with his left hand, causing his finger to go back to normal with his lost concentration. "Ow, that hurt." A few seconds later, he shook his head and started again. This time with more delicate focus, doing his best to try and slow the amount of power drawn to it. Although this did not work as well as intended. He did end up with a more reasonable result. However, upon looking at the light projected from his finger. He felt slightly ashamed with himself. He had reduced his finger to a flashlight. As this thought occurred to him three new red exclamations flashed that he allowed to pop up.

Skyler almost felt embarrassed by those notifications, but he was certain that Gaia was toying with him again. He let out a sigh before focusing once again on the task at hand. He applied a low amount of energy into his fingertip by allowing his mind to act like it were water coursing over his fingertip. To his fortune, he ended up with a very dim light this time. Although, it was slightly dimmer than Lei-Fei had done previously. He lowered his finger to the water's surface as Lei-Fei had done and rotated it in a circular motion by the knuckle of that finger. Sure enough, a small fish came up toward the surface of the water.

Not long after, Skyler sent a small spark towards the fish from his fingertip, shocking the small fish. However, he accidentally overloaded not only its nervous system, but the rest of the fish as well. He groaned softly. Sadly, over the next few hours he continued to try without success. That was until he had almost depleted his mana, sending out a final spark of energy at the fish. Its power was significantly less than he had done previously, but it was successful in stunning only that fish.

Skyler jumped up, pulling both of his hands up into fists before moving them in a pumping motion while quietly cheering. "Woot!" Shortly after that, Lei-Fei came out, looking in the direction of the pond. "Did you have any luck?" Skyler nodded and knelt down in front of the pond to show Lei-Fei his achievement. After successfully performing the task, Lei-Fei smiled and said. "Congratulations, Skyler. I have taught you all you desired to know. Good luck on your journey ahead." Skyler performed the hand gesture to Lei-Fei, but as Lei-Fei did so in return. The world around Skyler shattered into a million pieces before reassembling back into his bedroom. There were two new red exclamations awaiting him.

Skyler was sitting once again on his recliner with his original clothing while his hand continued where it had left off while reading that. His hand was gently rubbing the top of Cleo's head. He shook his head gently as his hand moved down along her back. "Ugh, this is mentally taxing. I hope this next book isn't as bad." He said before looking over toward the last book. Would the last book be just as difficult for Skyler? Or would it be easier?
