Surge is the first to send out her pokemon again, but this time she sends out her Magnemite first. “So, have you finally figured out what ‘floating’ means?”

“As a matter of fact… no! I still don’t know what’s going on with your magnet trick. Go, Mankey!” Surge visibly winces as the monkey pokemon materializes, while the onlooking girls are infatuated with his cuteness. Fools, he’s not cute at all. He’s a menace.

Surge seems all fired up as she starts, “Well, maybe you’ll stand a chance this time. But not if I can help it. Magnemite, use-”

The tension in the moment is lost as Mankey hops towards you, undoubtedly planning on doing something stupid instead of actually fighting. But now that you’ve learned the secret to controlling the damn thing… “DON’T YOU DARE MESS THIS UP FOR ME! GET OUT THERE AND FIGHT MANKEY!” It’s as if your pokemon never even moved in the first place. Mankey is instantly back in position and ready to fight. Better.

“I don’t think anyone’s ever gotten in a spat with their pokemon in my gym before…” Surge states, her earlier enthusiasm having wilted. “Magnemite, use Thundershock!” A bolt of lightning shoots out at Mankey, who skillfully dodges to the side. It marks the first time the Electric-type Gym Leader has actually used an Electric attack against you, which you figure must mean you’re getting somewhere.

“Mankey, Karate Chop!” Mankey soars through the air, and just barely misses Magnemite with a powerful blow.

“Magnemite, counterattack!” An electric shock hits Mankey in the back, worrying you that it may have been put out of commission. However, it shakes off the shock, turns right around, and slams its hand into the floating magnet, sending the opponent plummeting to the ground. Mankey is the winner, but at a cost as it was clearly affected by the earlier attack.

With Surge’s Pikachu having to contend with both your Mankey and your Diglett, her defeat is pretty much final. But the look on her face is anything but defeated. In fact, it looks like she wanted this to happen. “Good. It would have been a waste otherwise,” she foreshadows. Uh-oh, what trick does she have up her sleeve?

“Go, Raichu!” A bulkier mouse than the one you remember joins the fight, orange and armed with a much longer tail. Did she evolve her Pikachu? “I had a feeling you’d be back. Diglett or not, my new Raichu’s gonna crush you!”
