Chapter 7 by Koriandr Koriandr

What was Selina after?

A special magically charged artifact

"We're here to steal the Amulet of Heka from the Egyptian exhibit, got it?" she explained.

"This thing's said to be cursed, so be careful."

"Cursed? What do you mean cursed?"

"I'm sure it's nothing. The owners of ancient jewels like this usually just say items are cursed or haunted to scare away people like us so we don't steal them," Selina briefly explained.

"What do you mean like us?"

"You're my sidekick tonight, remember Catgirl?" Selina smirked teasingly.

"Let's just get this over with..." Damian sighed. He just hoped that Selina wouldn't ever breathe a word of this to his father once he was out of this stupid costume. He'd gotten too used to hearing Selina's voice exit his lips instead of his own thanks to that damn voice modulator. Leave it to his father to create the coolest, most advanced spy tech, and leave it to Damian to somehow get stuck with the voice and disguise of a sultry cat burglar.

"That's the spirit, doll. Here..." she gestured the the glass window pane next to them on the skylight.

"That's where our prize is," she pointed.

"To get in, you're going to use those pretty little cat claws of yours to draw a circle in the glass big enough for both of us to fit through, got it?"

Catwoman paused. If he was going to be her sidekick, even temporarily, she thought it would be fun to have someone to teach and mentor. She usually ran solo so there was never any young blood for her to pass her knowledge down to.

Batman had his 100,000 sidekicks yet she had nobody. Batman had plenty of contenders to replace him as the Dark Knight if he ever suddenly croaked or wanted to retire. His mantle would live on, the legend of the Batman had grown to be more than just one guy, his legacy would be carried by his surrogate sons. It made Selina want something similar. Who would replace her as Catwoman if something happened to her? She'd just be dead. All nine lives ran out. She wanted a successor and as crazy as it sounded, Damian was the closest thing she had going for her.

Damian looked to her then the glass. She wanted him to do it so he could learn himself. He'd never considered infiltrating a building in this manner. He also had never worn elongated black gloves that reached passed his elbows with long effeminate cat claws over each of his fingertips. He'd almost cut his face with them on accident a couple times when he went to itch his nose. He started mimkicking the way Selina did things with her nails so he wouldn't harm himself.

Catgirl poked her nail into the glass, which she didn't think would work but it slid in like a knife through warm butter. They must have been specially designed to do this kind of thing. Must make breaking into display cases a lot easier if you can just draw a hole in the glass. He wondered if his father had anything to do with the development of these little implements. He finished drawing the hole and looked to Selina for approval. She nodded and he jabbed all five of his claws on one hand into the circular glass cutout and carefully plucked it from the rest of the pane. The result was exactly what Selina asked for, a hole larger enough for each of them to fit through.

"Now we're gonna use the little whip of yours," her hand glided down Damian's artificially curved waist and tapped the whip on her belt. It was one of the few gadgets that came with the outfit. It looked exactly like Selina's but smaller.

Selina instructed him on how to grapple things with it. He did as he was told just wanting to wrap this up as quickly as he could. He whipped one of the overhead rafters and fastened the handle of the whip to his waist, allowing him to hang from the ceiling. Selina did the same, Damian watching her as he went. She coiled her whip around her leg and controlled her descent that way. He mimicked her and they were both hanging over the jewel.

"Now do we grab it?" Damian whispered.

"Hold on, kitty..." she reached for a small tube shaped device on her belt and held it out. She clicked a button and it released a spray. The gas revealed the previously invisible laser grid security system. There was a red beam right in front of Damian's face. If he'd reached out just then he would have tripped the alarm.

"What is this, a James Bond movie?"

"Gotta protect their shiny rocks," Selina smirked. It was nice having someone accompany her. Usually the only human interaction she got out of these little heists was when Batman chased her down shortly afterward.

Selina drew a circle in the glass and reached for the amulet.

However, as soon as she did so, the artifact flung itself out of its confinement and latched onto Damian.

What was the result of the curse?
