A show

I came back to the living room with my guitar, and she was sitting on the couch. I sat next to her, and she requested Jason Isbells “Cover Me Up.” I played it softly, just the way she liked, and she began to sing along with me, but it was more like she was singing to me.

So girl, leave your boots by the bed, we ain’t leaving this room

Til someone needs medical help or the magnolias bloom

It’s cold in this house and I ain’t going out to chop wood

So cover me up, and know you’re enough, to use me for good.”

The feeling I had was so different, calming and assuring, and anxious and excited all at the same time. She leaned up against me as she sang

So girl hang your dress out to dry, we ain’t leaving this room

Til Percy priest breaks open wide

And the river runs through

And carries this house on the stones like a piece of drift wood

So cover me up, and know you’re enough, to use me for good.”

Not paying attention, she spilled her wine on her dress, and excused herself to clean up. She went to the bathroom in my room, and a moment later, she called for me. John, I need some help in here. I can’t find something.” I walk in, and there she is standing there, the stain still on her dress. I slowly shut the door behind me, my heart racing by the way she’s looking at me. I walk up to her, and she goes for it. She stands on her toes, and kisses me. She wraps her hands around my head and pulls me in, while I pull her in at her waist, my hands running across her back, lowering slowly to her hips.
