Chapter 2 by Monalott Monalott

Who are you?

A scrawny little boy who survived with his big sister

After days of wandering through the countryside, running and hiding from the undead monsters with no food and very little sleep me and my big sister, Kelly Ann come across a house all by itself tucked away between a forest and fields.

"Okay Billi, remember we have to be very careful. Even if someone is alive, they might not want us here." Kelly Ann tells me as we huddle in a hole in the hedgerow watching the white timber framed house surrounded by woods on three sides. Nothing moves save for the trees and long grass blowing in the wind as we push ourselves out from the tangle of branches that scratch and scrape at us, catching and snagging at our clothes trying to ensnare us.

With a little fuss and a bit more noise than we would've liked, we emerge on a dirt path coming up from between the fields and leading up past the house. Finding it deserted save for a bunny rabbit a couple of hundred metres back down the path, we head towards the house. Watching the windows and scanning the garden we see no signs of anybody. The grass in the garden is overgrown and ripples almost hypnotically in the wind, giving us a bit of cover as we follow the wire fence to the front gate.

We stare up at the house and realise the downstairs windows have been boarded up while the upstairs windows are dark, before unlatching and opening the gate. It squeals loudly and unexpectedly as it swings on hinges in need of oiling and we freeze waiting for someone unseen to come and investigate.

Moments pass slowly and no one appears, so Kelly Ann bravely steps onto the flagstone path leading up to the house. I follow behind her and realise my heart is racing as we walk up the path, afraid that someone or, worse yet, something will appear at any moment.

We reach the porch without incident and I notice for the first time that Kelly Anns black leggings and black vest have lots of small rips in them from where we pushed through the hedge. Only her denim shorts appear to be unscathed as she turns to me. I look down at myself and see tears and snags in my green tshirt and grey tracky bottoms as well and as if by noticing them, I feel the stinging of lots of little scrapes all over my legs, arms and body.

"Right Billi, you stay here and keep a look out while I take a look around. Okay?" Kelly Ann says placing her hands on my shoulders and looking me in the eye.

You...
