Chapter 2 by nbody95 nbody95

Some time later...

A rude awakening

Your eyes flutter awake. You groggily push your cryo-pod open, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. You feel like you've slept for years, probably because you have. The entire journey was set to take nearly a decade. You wonder whether there is any way to tell the difference in cryo between months and years, or if it all feels the same. As the cryo wears off and your faculties begin to return to you, you realize that something is wrong. Above you is a terrible commotion:

"ALARM! ALARM! THIS IS CAPTAIN REYES SPEAKING: THE SHIP HAS SUSTAINED MAJOR DAMAGE. PREPARE FOR EMERGENCY LANDING ON THE NEARBY PLANET."

You snap to attention, terrified of the possibilities that could befall your ship. Before you have time to think much longer on it, another voice blares over the speakers:

"THIS IS DOCTOR LACEY SPEAKING: LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS ARE CRITICAL. WE ARE DISENGAGING CRYO-PODS. REPORT TO YOUR ASSIGNED EMERGENCY HANGARS IMMEDIATELY."

You look around frantically, desperately trying to remember which emergency hangar is yours, and how to get there. You finally choose the direction several people nearby seem to be headed, when you hear a sickening crunch. Another alarm blares overhead:

"THIS IS LIEUTENANT RICHARD CHO: WE HAVE SUSTAINED A SIZABLE IMPACT. ALL SYSTEMS ARE FAILING. DIAGNOSTICS REPORTS WE MAY LOSE THE TAIL OF THE SHIP. DO NOT EVACUATE TO THE REAR HANGARS. I REPEAT, DO NOT EVACUATE TO THE REAR HANGARS! EVERYONE HEAD TO THE FRONT OF THE SHIP IMMEDIATELY! WE'RE GOING DOWN!"

Before you can move, the entire ship lurches violently. The hallway in front of you collapses, trapping dozens, if not hundreds, who had made the unfortunate mistake of heading for the rear hangars. You look to your left and see that, in all the chaos, there are six other cryo-pods that failed to shut down. Recognition hits you like a ton of bricks as you see a couple of familiar faces from back home amongst the pods. You move to manually override the pods, when the ship lurches again. You look back toward the tail of the ship, only to see with horror that, as Lieutenant Cho warned, the tail is beginning to separate from the rest of the ship. If you don't get through the airlock behind you in the next thirty seconds, you will be sucked into the vacuum of space as the ships breaks apart.

You look up at the poor sleeping passengers in front of you with despair. You have enough time to save only one.

Who will it be?
