Chapter 8
by
Ben Rosewood
How does the date pan out?
A rocky start
On Sunday, Spencer pulled up in front of Evelyn's house. She was waiting, wearing a pair of figure-hugging jeans, a black leather jacket and a black shirt with some sort of demon creature on it. Out of the car, Spencer said "Hey there."
"Hey." Evelyn walked over to him. "So do you want to have something, or should we get going?"
"I see no reason not to keep moving."
"Cool."
"That's an interesting shirt by the way."
"Oh yeah. You a fan?"
"Uhh, I don't know what it relates too."
After a chuckle, Evelyn said "Oh it's a Method of Madness shirt. They're a metal band."
"Oh, okay."
"Not your scene?"
"Uhh, not really."
"That's cool. C'mon, let's go."
Spencer and Evelyn got into his SUV. As he drove off, Spencer said "So, how was your week?"
"Pretty good I guess. Last night was fun."
"What happened?"
"Well, I'm working security at the country club, and I see some rustling in the bushes, so I walk over there. Turns out one of the son's of the members thought it'd be a good place to sneak off with him and his girlfriend."
"Were they in the act."
"No I spared the poor girl. Country club boys like him are always two-pump chumps."
"Uhh, that observation come from experience?"
"Unfortunately."
"Uhh-huh, sooooooo... how long have you been a deputy?"
"This will be my sixth year. I did a short stint in the Navy, before I got pregnant with Riley. After the divorce, I worked in hospitality for a bit before deciding to join the Sheriff's Department."
"So you like action?"
"Yeah, but I don't know. I kinda think I need to look for something else."
"Why's that?"
"Money really. It's a bit hard raising Riley and Logan on my budget."
"Well I'm sorry to hear that."
"Oh it's not your fault Spence."
"I know, but I still respect it's a worry."
"So what about you? You were in politics right?"
"Yeah for the most part. Did work at a coffee shop whilst in college if that counts as hospitality."
"Well on a technicality."
"Oh I know all about technicalities." Spencer chuckled.
"So what's retirement like?"
Spencer took a second to think of his answer, knowing that Evelyn has fair reason to envy his current situation. "Well... it's I don't know... It's a lot a time on my hands and all."
"Oh Spence. You don't have to feel bad for me. I've been to Afghanistan. There are people all around the world who have it much worse than I do."
"Well that's a good way to look at it I guess."
"It's what keeps me going throughout the week."
Spencer headed down a dirt road, nearing his destination. The rest of the drive is spent in an awkward silence, causing Spencer to wonder if his first date in six years could get any more awkward.
Does the date get any more awkward?
