Chapter 145

The White Room
A plain white room?
Nothing. That was my first impression. Absolutely nothing. Pure white, as far as I could see. It extended in all directions as I sat there.
The phone buzzed again in my hand as I sat in the plain featureless room. Was it a room, really? It seemed to go in all directions, a flat meaningless void. There was something under my feet at least, and I rose, glancing about myself. Again the phone buzzed, and I looked at it. Where was Eris? Where was Artemis? Where... fuck Ok... remember, concentrate on... dammit, nothing's working. Where...
The Phone in my hand buzzed again.
No. She'd told me to ignore it. They'd all told me to ignore it. And while they were with me, it seemed so right. All the things that had happened. Crazy, out of nowhere, but they all fit. This room, this phone buzzing at me. It felt wrong. Like it didn't belong.
I glanced down, and noted a single message.
"Are you there?" Was written on the messaging app. No sender mentioned. Nothing to identify. Everything else on the phone screen, blank. Not even the phone app was visible. Just the message, blinking maddeningly.
"No... no I'm not Here!" I snarled, throwing the phone to the ground angrily. It didn't impact. No sound of impact, no break of plastic, nothing.
"Are you there?" Came a quite female voice. I recognized it. It was the same voice as that damn computer assistant that people kept trying me to install on my phone. They kept telling me how helpful she was, how I could just ask her to do anything, from turning on the lights in my house, to answering the door, to getting food. All I had to do was ask her for them. And it was coming from... everywhere... it had to be coming from... oh there it was.
I noted the small white table with the circular glowing device in the center. I couldn't see where the cord was, but these days with digital, I knew that was no longer a necessity if somebody wanted to get cute.
"No." I said quietly.
"Ha. Ha. That was a funny joke. " The computerized voice spoke again, its diction precise and slightly off. That alight twinge of hesitation that let you know what was wrong and that there was only a whirring, clicking machine behind the soft words. "Would you like me to forward that to your friends?"
"No." I said again. looking around the room. There had to be something else here, something.
"There are no exits from this room." The voice repeated. Soft and feminine. It seemed slightly less computerized now. "Would you like me to make an exit?"
"No." I repeated, stepping away from the table. After about five steps I found myself in front of it once again. The table had become more solid now, and the device upon it now bore a small power cord which led down one of the table's four legs.
"Perhaps you'd like some music?" The small box repeated quietly. "I have an entire library of music available for your selection. As suggested by the first few chapters, smooth jazz..."
I winced as the music began to flow from... somewhere. Damn it was awful. Every bit of corporate stuff Kaila had ever complained about having to play in front of drunk executives seemed to have been combined into one hideous concoction of off key notes and random ejaculation of horn.
"Turn it off!" I snarled, whipping my hand down on the box and sweeping it off the table. The expected crash never materialized, instead I was greeted again with Nothing but pure silence and the white room. Quiet again.
"There are no movies in your area with that title." The voice spoke again, from the phone that lay on the ground. I tried looking in every other direction, but no matter what I did, no matter how I tried to ignore it, the phone kept popping into my field of view.
"Uhm... fuck... let's try... holodeck, end simulation? Uh... There's no place like home? Operator?"
"Gimmie an I! Gimmie an O! Gimmie an S! What does that spell? Sorry, I get a little carried away sometimes…" The voice responded in its flat tone. Was... was it making a joke?
"That... that doesn't even make fucking SENSE... " I grumbled. Yeah, definitely a fucking computer. Where's the damn... "... audio pick up?" I spoke the last out loud, hoping that it would give me a hint.
"Like the ideal vacuum, you're the only thing in my universe."
Yep, random pickup line. Totally that damn thing. How do i turn it off?
"There are fifteen hundred notifications waiting on your twitter account..." The voice spoke quietly. "sounds like someone's getting popular."
"I don't even have a fucking twitter account," I grumbled.
"That's how many messages are about you. If you had one, you'd know that. Would you like me to set up a twitter account for you?" The voice spoke again.
"Are you just stupid?" I snarled again, trying to figure out a way to just end this damn thing's control, or whatever. Time out... they called time out, so... wait Eris had said something about her daddy's little...
"I'm smart enough to know not to answer that question." Was that a hint of self-satisfied gotcha in the computer's voice? Oh...
"You should know, nobody likes a wise ass." I replied, trying to ignore the voice. Ok, let's see, Eris and I had just...
"Typical Male Chauvanist Pig Fantasy, Hashtag Metoo" The voice said. "That's from your high school crush. The one you followed around and made a complete idiot of yourself over."
My attention was drawn to a small flashing blue check mark and a picture of a girl from many years ago... a memory I barely remembered. The words burned there in my sight, a sting flashing through my heart as I remembered the old humiliation, and the old mistake. A mistake I didn't make any more, so why... why did it bother me? I'd made my amends, learned from it, and yet it was like it had just happened again. Like the life I'd lived past that point was nothing.
"Brent should have his ass **** by fifty black guys in a prison shower. Hashtag Metoo Hashtag toxicmasculinity" The voice spoke in its flat monotone. "That's from an actress you really like. Has a thousand retweets and fifteen thousand likes. Oh She also says that you probably have a small dick."
The picture and blue check mark flared brightly, the numbers jumping upwards as I watched. Not too fast, just one every seconds. It just didn't end, the numbers ticking upwards, and with each notification, my phone buzzed again and again. Dammit... ok, guess I just can't get RID of it.
"Brent should totally apologize and make a donation to a **** crisis center," The computer voice continued. "That one's from a Congressperson. And she thoughtfully provided a link to stories of real **** survivors, would you like to hear one?"
"How do I turn this fucking thing off?" I closed my eyes tightly, trying to block out the repeated accusations that it was throwing at me. They weren't... they weren't real, were they? People don't say those things about things they have no conception or context on.
"Just say my name and ask. My name is Siri... with an e."
