A phone call

My phone rings in its place on the bedside table. It's my father, I see as I look as the screen. I pick up.

"Devon, are you certain that you will not succeed me as the White Swift?"

"This again? How many times must you rehash this!"

"I only want to be absolutely certain, dear boy. You realize that would mean that Eva must do it in your stead?"

I gulped. Indeed, I had considered the possibility. Eva as the next White Swift was a terrifying idea. No doubt she would enjoy it, at the cost of those around her. A small voice in me begged that I should do all in my power to avoid such an outcome.
"Make up your mind, son. Meet me at the Plaza Hotel at noon. I will hear your final answer in person."

He hangs up, and Sydney turns to look at me, concern on her face. The coffee seems to have done its work.

"Is he still pestering you about that Hero business? He should fucking lay off!" Yikes! Guess her filter hasn't come online yet.

"I know, babe, I know. but..." I explain about Eva and my concerns.

She looks pensive for a moment before she answers. "Still, if the public can't see her other face, its their fault. You say she's careful, that means she won't try anything too illegal, right? Plus, you're the next CEO of Craim & Pai, she can't touch you! There'll be to much bad PR."
"You're right babe. I'm overthinking this." I muse, nodding my head in agreement to her words. Sydney worked as a reporter at The Planetary Times, a newspaper headquartered in the city. Sure, she was a gossip columnist, but she was well aware of current affairs. Her predictions, for better or worse, were right on mark. Well 80 percent of the time, but you get the idea. I trusted her.

"Are you off today? It's nearly 8. " I observe, as I notice the time on the clock. Her eyes widen. "Shit, say that earlier dickhead!" She throws off the covers and heads to the bathroom.

Minutes later I strip as well, joining her in the shower. It was faster this way, after all.
