Chapter 19

... What he said.
A nice day on the town.
I decided now was as good a time as any to build up my reputation and simply have a generally calmer day than yesterday. I didn't have a good way of making money, so I suppose shopping was not a realistic idea. As I thought about what exactly to do, I got a lot of looks from the passersby.
I decided that standing there wasn't helping me think, so I had a nice stroll around. I greeted people as I walked down the roads, getting mixed responses. Most were either weary because of my spirit, or curious because of what I did yesterday. In the end, no one approached me before I reached the edge of town.
Upon reaching the edge of town, I saw something that gave me an idea. Farmland stretched for miles around, and I knew instantly how to get some spending cash. I started to approach the nearest house, it was a good while away but still far closer than any of the others.
It seemed to be around spring, the crops were not more than sprouts, and the foliage in the forest had also matched that assumption. As I approached the house, I saw some young children out-front playing. They eventually noticed me and stopped to stare for awhile, before they all encouraged one to go inside.
Just when I reached the house, the young child emerged from the house with a man who looked to be in his late 40s. He was quite quick to address me, "What brings you here, out in these dirty farmlands?"
I was confused for a moment at his hostility, but then realized with my attire he must assume I was nobility. "Ah, my apologies for any misunderstandings, but I am a priest, not a member of the high class." I gave a deep bow which seemed to surprise him somewhat. "I will admit that I came here to potentially earn some money, as I find my pockets quite empty."
The farmer had a rough, slightly aggressive expression. "We don't have anything we can donate to the churches. Feel free to see yourself back to town, I don't anticipate anyone else out here has anything either."
I once again bowed, making him unable to hide his confusion. "It seems there has been another misunderstanding. I do not seek donations, but instead to bless your crop in exchange for a wage."
"Crop grows just fine, thanks for the offer. Blessed crop doesn't sell for enough more for me to pay you now." He seemed slightly annoyed, though less hostile than when he first spoke.
"I believe you may change your mind if I show you the blessing of my god upon the land." I gave a respectful nod. "I will bless a crop of your choice for free, to show its value."
The farmer raised his eyebrow at my statement. "Sure..." He then let me towards the nearest sprout coming from the ground, and unceremoniously gestured to it. I made some fancy gestures and raised my hand while casting Incur Growth. The farmer's eyes went wide as the tiny sprout grew, quickly becoming a mighty stalk that swelled with many ears of corn. 'I made sure to hold back the spell, don't want a crop the size of a redwood falling on his house.'
I nodded with satisfaction towards the plant before turning back to the farmer. "I believe you can see the usefulness of the blessing of my lord, Moged-Ruun?"
He stared at the crop wide-eyed for a few moments before asking, "How much?"
I consider for a moment. "A quarter of the profits? By that I mean, a quarter of whatever you sell them for, minus the cost of the seeds."
He doesn't even look away from the plant before he answers. "Sound's fair enough."
After that, I got to work. The spirit could not cast Incur growth unfortunately, but it was able to grant me some of its own mana, at an inefficient rate. I manage to grow a great many crops, hopefully earning enough to sustain myself in the near future. Once the spirit ran out of mana, the children started to try and play with it. Them trying to get reactions from it reminded me of those tourists who mess with the royal guard.
I was near done when someone else arrived at the farm. I didn't know who it was, and was simply working, so paid them no head. That was until they started working behind me, harvesting the crop I grew. After finishing off the last of my mana, I turned around to see who it was.
Oliver looked up to greet me. "Just testing out the new arm, making sure it works right." He said in a somewhat teasing tone.
I chuckled. "No complaints, I hope? I don't believe I could accept a refund."
He laughed. "None at all. I almost feel stronger than before."
We enjoyed the time a bit, until I asked him a question, "So, I assume you came here after me?"
He nodded. "I have a lot of questions. And a debt to repay." He finished harvesting his crop, bringing it back to the farmer. "The questions can wait for now, I suppose."
We continued working for awhile. In the end, we helped the farmer carry his early harvest to the market, earing some good spending cash. The farmer thanked us graciously, and it served as a good stunt to spread my popularity, as word spread of "my god" bringing about a miracle harvest.
When we were at last finished with the work, Oliver turned to me. Before he could say anything, I let out a slight chuckle. "So, what do you want to ask first?"
... Can this guy stop stealing my job?
