After reviewing the files to your satisfaction, you finish your steak dinner. You’re not quite in the mood to head back to your apartment but you’re not sure which of your usual haunts to try next. If all you’re looking for is a beer or two then you could try Mulligan’s Saloon. On the other hand, if it is a broad you want to find to warm your bed this evening Red Square North by the History Faculty would be a better bet.
As you ponder your options your GAME TRACKER beeps. You have a message from your friend and contact Lucas Brunnman.
The message reads
“Hey Mason, dick, I’ve got a few new shiny toys if you’re interested. Meet me at the bar on 12th by 4th at 22:45 if you’re interested.”
Lucas works as a senior technician in the GAME Effects and Affects Department. In other words, he studies the magic that powers the GAME.
The residents of Shoubu were well aware that the Magic of Shoubu could conjure up all kinds of wonderous effects. And the tokens gathered in winning CHALLENGES and completing tasks could also purchase such effects. But not many people fully appreciated that there was a third source of magic at Shoubu; castoffs.
Say some nerd saved up his PRIZE tokens and decides to purchase a real-life wizard’s staff like Gandalf that might allow him extraordinary power on campus but such an item would have no effect in the outside world. Sure, many students would take such an item as a souvenir when they left the University but there was still a steady stream of magic items left behind. The vast majority of these were innocuous and the secret of activating them lost when their owner graduated and left. But a few could have their secrets pried from them. Magic items that didn’t require a CHALLENGE or PRIZE tokens to use and weren’t recorded on the GAME TRACKER often provided a useful edge in carrying out PI work.
This was where Lucas came in. He was a good source of useful items. Of course Lucas would want payment. Either prize tokens or one of your failing and attractive female students being introduced to some ‘easy’ extra credit “working” with him as an assistant in the GAME Effects and Affects Department.
