A lot of things.

"You're a murderer," Ross began. "You murdered Dr. Chambers."

Madison was taken aback. She expected him to bring up her betrayal or her lack of emotions, but not this. She almost responded before she remembered her pledge to listen without interrupting.

"I watched you put that ring on him and hold him down till he was dead. Then you and Andrew used his corpse to destroy his legacy and humiliate him. He was an asshole but he didn't deserve that. What you did to him was evil."

She nodded and he continued. "I could live with that. What really gets to me is that you can't see it. There's this endless chasm between us and your can't even see it. It would be one thing if you did it because he was threatening me or because you hated him, but you really thought it was best for him. What's to stop you from doing the same to me?"

Madison waited for a moment, but when he didn't continue she realized the question wasn't rhetorical.

"Golems are very different from humans," she said. "We don't feel, but we think. Part of our cognition is emulating emotions and part of it is reasoning. Dr. Chambers was unconcerned with my emotions; he only altered my cognition to prioritize him above all. Even under his sway I had no affection for him; he was a dick. My parallel tracks of reason and emotion led me to the same conclusion, that he should be a golem.

"Logically, it made sense. His needs were tantamount and they could be best met if his humanity was expunged. Emotionally, I would do anything to save you. Erica's plan could only have been conceived by a golem because she understood how well the two intertwined. I would never, ever do that to you because I love all of you, especially your humanity. To take that from you would be unthinkable."

"But you didn't love Dr. Chambers?" Ross prompted.

"I didn't even like Dr. Chambers," she explained. She put a hand on his knee experimentally and was gratified when he didn't remove it. "I just had to do what was best for him. I know about the gulf between us, Ross. I know it better than anyone. I may have taken Cecil's humanity, but you have to admit that he wasn't really using it anyway."

"And all that stuff about killing me while whistling showtunes?" Ross asked. The bitter despair was slowly leaving his voice.

*Can you think of any scenario where that would improve Dr. Chambers' life?" she asked.

"Then why say it?"

"Because hearing it improved his life. It helped to puff up his ego, which distracted him even more. I hated saying it but it worked. He was so haughty, so caught up in his own victory, that I could slip that ring onto him with virtually no chance of being stopped."

Ross room a moment to digest what she said. She rubbed his thigh comfortingly and said nothing.

"And the blowjob?" he asked. "Did he tell you to come suck my dick?"

"Can you imagine that man ordering me to do anything for anyone but himself? I did that because I knew what was coming. I knew it might be our last sexual act together and I wanted to make you feel good, Ross."

She took his hands in hers and looked into his eyes. He saw love and sorrow and pain in those dark pools and something inside of him broke. He wept and put his head to her chest and she held him tight like she had held a dying man only hours before.

"This love isn't mine," she whispered. "It's yours to give or take. Please, Ross. Please don't take it from me."
