A light knock

A moment passes before a light knock rasps Ella’s bedroom door.

“A-alex? Is everything a-alright in there?” Ed, her younger freshmen roommate, calls out from the other side. “I-i don’t want to interrupt anything . . .” The concern in his voice should put Ella at ease but she quickly begins to panic trying to think how to respond with her feminine voice.
