Chapter 21
by fyreant
What's next?
A lengthy message from the video director...
The next cut in the (by now quite lengthy) video is another soundless black title card with white text, though the message this time is much more lengthy, and slowly scrolls down like the intro to a classic science fiction movie.
“Thermodynamic miracles... events with odds against so astronomical they're effectively impossible, like oxygen spontaneously becoming gold. In each human coupling, a thousand million sperm vie for a single egg. Multiply those odds by countless generations, against the odds of your ancestors being alive; meeting; siring this precise son; that exact daughter... In this case, of a young woman happening to undertake a mission to this exact building at this exact time. The odds of finding that particular door left unlocked. The odds of an unremarkable middle-aged policeman happening to remember and deciding to turn back; and that his commander would choose that particular moment to pop in and say hello. That her own teammates would leap to such wild conclusions and take such drastic, unethical action upon finding the prophylactics among her gear. Until this young woman engages in intercourse with a man she has every reason to hate, and of that union, of the thousand million children competing for fertilization, it is one, only one, that emerges.
But this world - and this city - is so full of people, so crowded with these miracles that they become commonplace and we forget... I forget. We gaze continually at the world and it grows dull in our perceptions... such as, for example, after having seen a highly secure archive containing four floor-to-ceiling shelves containing videos chronicling 237 similar situations spanning more than 4 decades. Yet seen from the another's vantage point, as if new, it may still take our breath away.
Since this will be the final record that I produce before I retire from my work for the League and face justice, I feel at liberty to add this indulgent interlude of commentary. But it is not merely commentary, but context. It is fitting that my final work involves this heroine, Fairburne, because she has the distinction of having appeared in another one, at a, shall we say, different life stage. Although - and I'm sure some would say this fact is very unfortunate - Fairburne is not the first example of a hero or heroine whose origin story appears in one of these records later starring in one herself, this is a very special case, since she came into being after the very first such recording that I myself created. And that same scenario which led to Fairburne's birth also directly resulted in the last 20 years of work for the League, using my talents to help their public relations, media production, and crime analysis in addition to making records of delicate matters. The original creator of the camera equipment making this possible, the legendary Celluloid Crusader, was slowly dying from poisoning by a super-criminal who didn't appreciate his work, and he saw the potential in redeeming me, the worst kind of villain myself, and using my filmographic talents to continue. Although some think of this as just a matter of complying with government regulation, on account of how much havoc unknown superhumans can wreak, Celluloid Crusader taught me that it is really about more deeply understanding the human condition. I owe him and the League of Propriety an immeasurable debt for helping me to overcome the psycho-sexual derangements that drove me to evil, and giving me a chance to redeem myself in some small part by doing this meaningful work. Soon, I will pass the torch to a new figure, Documentrix, to keep up the good work.
So if you happen to be watching this, allow me to say, thank you, Fairburne. Although we're not biologically related, the two League heroes who became your parents came together because of me, and I think of you almost like the daughter I never had. I wish you all the best in dealing with a very difficult situation. In case you are curious, I no longer have your "first" video. All copies except one have been destroyed. I'm sure your father will be ready to discuss the truth of it with you eventually, and tell you who your birth mother was. He's a good man, and wouldn't keep such a secret from you without excellent reasons. On that note, I would encourage you to check out video #154, which might help encourage you to eventually forgive your teammate Roxanne, who is, in truth, more than just your teammate. Stay safe out there (not a pun).
Sincerely,
Cinema Castellan (formerly known as the villain 'Smut King').
......
Update 5/10/18
Things have not gone as planned. Documentrix has been reticent to take up my camera. She doesn't seem to think these recordings are necessary or appropriate. I may need to find a different replacement after all. At this rate, with the latest wave of recruitment from around the world swelling the League's numbers (and the other kind of swelling that so often follows in its wake), my eventual replacement is going to have a serious backlog to address. I've been given another temporary pardon and my eventual trial and imprisonment has been pushed back. If you might think I'm happy, I'm not - not after I spent so long on such a dramatic and uplifting farewell message. Whatever, I'm not cutting it, not after I already had to cut the scene with WreckBoi and R____ ______. It's too good to cut. Since I'm still stuck here for the moment, here are some updates on the Fairburne situation.

Perils of a Novice Superheroine
A generic superheroing setting drenched with sex and scandal
Acropolis City, the center of super-human and caped crusader activity in this particular world - with its own dizzying highs and lows, high-tech skylines and slums standing in stark, four-color contrast, it provided everything that a costumed megalomaniac or masked vigilante could ask for. In fact, as is usually the case where colorful masked characters are the norm, it has become something of an institution by this point. But although the mere existence of costumed heroes and villains no longer shocks people, these people - who, by their very nature, thrive on attention - keep finding new ways to stand out from the crowd and attract the eye. This last goal tends to get a lot of emphasis in the most simple, sexualized way possible. For reasons that the world's most brilliant scientists have yet to explain, latent super-abilities seem to manifest more often in women than men by a ratio of 3 to 1 or more. This is true even when the superpower isn't "natural"; paranormal artifacts fall into their hands, esoteric martial arts schools never seem to have a male heir, the technological prototypes they test always seem to be the ones that are most easily used or abused for good and evil. Unfortunately, the glory days of the past where citizens were happy to see any old masked do-gooder show up are over - in recent years, Acropolis City has established a ranking system of heroes where those who get high marks from the citizens and resolve incidents are rewarded with corporate sponsorships and (most coveted of all) seats at the prestigious League of Propriety. Those who intimidate the populace, cause excessive collateral damage, or simply don't excite anyone, garnering low rankings, get 'asked' to move to less prestigious cities. Few superheroes want to get stuck battling clans of villainous hillbillies and corrupt small-town sheriffs for the rest of their careers, so they're always eager to please the influential citizens of Acropolis City (judges, eminent scientists, first responders, and of course the all-important reporters). On the other side of the law, a similar dynamic predominates; only the most glamorous and charismatic costumed ne'er-do-wells can make it in this town. And so, the novice superheroines just learning the ways of battling for justice and order, without any team to back them up, always end up patrolling the skeeviest, most undesirable slums of the city and taking on the most thankless rescues. As if that weren't bad enough, most of them feel obliged to dress in ways that get more outlandish and revealing with every passing year while they fight the good fight and/or feed their craving for attention, depending on how you see the 'cape life'. As if that weren't troublesome enough, the superhuman mutations that make so many of these heroes' careers possible also result in greatly increased sexual sensitivity, particularly in females. The adventures and misadventures that these spandex-clad lady crusaders get into are often too hot to print for the kind of comics that their young admirers would read. Messy mistakes will be made, but you don't want to disappoint your readers, do you? So let the League know what kind of superheroine you are, your chosen name, powers, and appearance, and they'll send you out on your first patrols. Good luck.
