Chapter 5 by Squelchapron Squelchapron

What are you studying?

A human dominating an elven town

You enter your laboratory, also known as the Department of Elven Studies. While that's certainly an accurate name, your mission is more sinister than it implies: you are responsible for feeding information to the Avarian Defense Council, in case your pointy-eared neighbors ever become a threat... Or, far more likely, in case Avaria ever decides to become a threat to them. Your nation isn't usually in the business of waging war, but the race of long-lived, magically-inclined almost-humans living so close to your borders is the topic of much discussion among Avaria's more paranoid leaders.

You capitalized on this paranoia twenty years ago, when you proposed the Poisoned Well Initiative.

The idea came to you when you heard reports of Avarian merchants being treated unusually by elf populations in the settlements just outside of your country's borders. Apparently the outer border of Avaria's Fundamental Spell is not black-and-white: the mind control magic fades gradually, producing unusual results when humans and non-humans interact in the outskirts. As those very outskirts are being settled by elven merchants, diplomats, and even colonists, studying the nature and range of the Fundamental Spell is becoming more and more important.

The Poisoned Well Initiative was a simple plan, designed to be inexpensive enough that a Neophyte (such as your former self) would be allowed to implement it. It hinged on the new discovery that the outer reaches of the Fundamental Spell allow human males to exert a subtle-yet-powerful influence over elves, even if neither party is aware of said influence. The plan went like this:

  • Purchase an infant human male ****
  • Implant him with a scrying stone for ongoing tracking and observation
  • Identify a newly-founded elven settlement just outside of Avaria
  • Identify a childless elven married couple within that settlement
  • Abandon the human child near the elven couple's home
  • Observe the effects on the settlement

You hypothesized that within a couple of decades, the human's magically-enhanced influence would throw the entire settlement into disarray, defusing the threat of an organized and growing elven settlement so close to Avaria's borders.

Walking past the lab's many scrying dishes and crystal balls, you greet your Neophytes. They're hard at work as usual, scribbling notes as they peer into the arcane observation devices. Erick, Slick Silas, Obrin, Hairy Hadvar, Evan, Dineus, and Ethan the Stomper... All good lads, if a little awkward and inexperienced.

You take a minute to look over your notes. The settlement you are studying, New Eldria, has grown considerably since the experiment began. What was once a loose collection of merchant tents is now a bustling town, full of hard-working colonists and their children.

"Rexus," the boy who is the main instrument of your experiment, is turning twenty years old today. He was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Aldryn, an elven couple in their early hundreds... Roughly equivalent to thirty, in human years. Since they "rescued" him from the wilderness, Rex has hardly left their home: the long-lived elves regard teenagers as toddlers. As a human living among them, this puts Rex in the unusual position of being a full-grown adult embarking for his first day of school.

While the spell's influence has been present within the Aldryn household for a couple of years already (leading to some strange and depraved developments, by elven standards), today is the day that Rex finally takes his power into the community at large.

Needless to say, you and your assistants are watching with bated breath.
