Chapter 2 by An0nymus1ndividual An0nymus1ndividual

You are...

A goddess

A goddess, a deity. Your domains are the dawn and the dusk. The transition from one to the next. You are Linalia of the Between. Others are greater than you, more known and more powerful, but you are to be respected as a true goddess should.

You are also considered the goddess of purity, and the mortals claim chastity, which was certainly not your intention or invention. When you spoke of "purity" to your first prophets and messengers, when you sent out your angels with such words on their lips, you had intended something more akin to "purity of purpose" - the unhesitating motion from one to other. Instead the mortals tied purity to stagnancy, to preserving what is. Even as they set places still and unchanging they called them worship-places to the goddess of must-change must-move. And you... chafed under that, more than a bit. You understood that the mortals wanted for set places and comprehensible rituals to spread worship through, but surely they must be capable of better than this?

That was your first discontent, the largest and most consistent, but it seemingly only encouraged you to notice more and more things you cared little for. Endless managing and decision-making on the most tedious things, constant entreatments for your intervention, powers granted and squandered on petty trivialities. More and more you found yourself losing interest, drifting away into an apathetic haze.

Even your angels, crafted by you from your own intentions and granted hearts that accepted duty in excess of any other creatures, you could see growing more harried and unhappy with every return they made from tending to another task amongst the mortals. In time one even approached you as you looked upon the shift from dawn to twilight your realm existed within. "My Goddess," she said, and you pulled your attention to her. She had a sharp face, brown hair, wings in ever-shifting purple hues, beautiful as all angels meant to walk more generally amongst mortals are - the more specialized ones were often more esoteric. After a moment, you recall her name to be Teana.

"My Goddess," she repeated, "why do you have us serve these petty mortals? Why must we go to their constant failures so repeatedly?"

It was practically tradition that a deity would eventually have their angels begin to question them, turn against them. A First Fall. It had happened to may before; would it now happen to you? Perhaps it would shift the monotony. You see no reason not to be honest.

"Do you see this realm, my daughter?" you say, gesturing outwards to the plane around you. Teana nods, and you continue, "I am the Goddess of the Between, that which can never be constant. And yet how long has it been since mortal minds have seen to this current form?" You stare into the angel's eyes; to her credit, she does not break your gaze. "I send you and yours to the mortal realm, because only there might a way to break this monotony be found. It was created there, after all."

Teana holds your gaze for a long while. Then she clasps a hand to her chest and kneels. "I understand, my Goddess. I misunderstood your cause."

"Oh?" You tilt your heads curious and inviting. Others had had angels Fall before; but this sounded almost like it could be something wholly new.

"I thought you sent us simply to maintain the mortals through their squabbles and clean the messes they made in Your spaces," Teana answered. "And I could not understand why you would have us preserve them from their own consequences so. I began to wonder if you had plan or goals at all. Now I see we were meant not just to serve but to seek a cure to your ailments. I shall redouble my efforts!"

With that she rises, nods to you graciously, and hurries away in the direction of one of the portals to the mortal realm. You can only watch her leave, mildly startled from your cloud of not-caring. You were not certain what to make of Teana's conclusions, nor if you fully agreed with them, but well-

Regardless, this was new. Interesting. Perhaps you could find it in you to bring your attention back into the world for a time longer. Just to see if she might succeed.

Teana brings to your attention...
