Chapter 17 by dkgooner dkgooner

Do you tell him of your shared past?

A few years ago… and the coaching duties

"One more thing, Mr. Watt… Brian," you catch yourself as you decide to be a little more familiar your new subordinate, "It's not the first time we met, although I don't expect you to remember."

"I don't understand," he responds confused.

"Mmmm…” you exhale, feeling your cheeks blush at sharing your tale of the baseball trip, “It was a few years ago. In Vermont. Burlington. You were playing shortstop for the Lake Monsters. You went four for five with a home run and two stolen bases and played your position like you invented it,” you tell him, struggling to keep from sounding as a smitten fangirl, “- after the game my girlfriend and I saw you at a pub. You were with some of your teammates and a lot of young women, but my girlfriend dragged me over and we talked for a bit. You signed a baseball for me!" You add giddily, "I thought you were wonderful."

"Best day I ever had in professional baseball," he replies in an almost hushed tone, reminiscing himself, "I didn't have too many of them."

"I've always loved the game,” you begin telling him about your passion for baseball, “Played softball as a girl. Here, as a matter of fact. Shortstop. I ensured you would be coach of our team. I wanted to…" you pause, considering how your words sound, "I thought you'd be an asset. A professional… coaching…"

"I couldn't hit pro pitching," he says with a sad little smile, "You saw me on a good day."

"You're still better than anything this school has seen," you are quick to assure him.

"I'm flattered Ms. Nay… Diane," he says with a **** smile on his lips, "It's nice to be remembered.”

You take a deep breath, smiling shyly as you sit next to him, blushing and nervously touching your throat, assuring him, "I think you'll be a great asset to the school Brian,” and telling him with a sly little smile, “- you have to be better than the last coach of the team. I'm afraid she just wasn't up to the task."

"I'm not sure that I am," the coach insist on selling his abilities short, "I've never coached before."

"But you've been coached, and at a professional level," you assure him that he’ll do great, certainly better than you could if the past few years where you were coaching the team, "I'm sure you can show the girls things that the last coach couldn't."

"I'll do my best," he smiles appreciatively at your words of encouragement, before inquiring "- the previous coach, is she still here? Will there be any bad feelings about me taking over the team?"

"None at all, in fact, she'll welcome it. You see, I was that coach," you assure him, your smile growing and skin turning a deeper shade of red.

"I see," he nods his head thoughtfully, "- well I hope I can live up to your expectations."

"I have no doubt that you'll do well," you tell him, "I suspect the girls will do better under you…” you swallow a groan at this, and quickly ad, “- I mean with you as coach," diverting your gaze and clearing your throat before returning your gaze to him, making an effort to appear professional.

Anything else to share with the new coach?
