Chapter 22 by Rebekka Rebekka

Continue

A few weeks later

Over the next weeks, you and Laura form an unspoken bond. It's strange, as if you're on a new plane of existence together, a private bubble where you're the only two people in the world. Even though you're not wearing Laura's skin, you feel closer to her than ever before. Her thoughts are as clear as if they were your own, and you find that you understand her like you never have before.

Despite the peculiarity of the situation, it feels right. You both seem to adjust to the new normal. Laura seems unbothered by the obedience compelled by the pen. You have, after all, done nothing to **** this power. In fact, you find yourself **** to order her around. You'd rather she does things of her own free will. You want her to be herself, not a puppet. The fact that she's loyal to you and would do anything you ask of her is simply a comforting backdrop to your unique relationship.

At school, you both act as if nothing has changed. Yet, there is an undercurrent, a silent understanding that permeates every glance and every touch. Your friends notice the shift, the sudden closeness, the silent conversations that occur without words. Some of them even tease you, hinting at a relationship.

"Finally!" Juliette grins one day, "I always knew you two would end up together. It was just a matter of time!"

Both you and Laura blush at the comment but say nothing, silently agreeing to let them believe what they want. In truth, the concept of 'together' seems too simplistic to describe what you share.

On quieter evenings, when it's just the two of you, you learn to enjoy each other's company in a new way. The conversations are deeper, more meaningful, often drifting into shared memories and future dreams. It's strange to be so in tune with someone else, to have such an intimate understanding of them.

The desire to step back into her skin still tugs at you, but you resist. There's a balance to your relationship now that you're unwilling to upset. However, as the days turn into weeks, you realize that this balance might be fragile. As much as you love this closeness, you also fear it. The potential for hurt is there, lurking just beneath the surface of your shared happiness.

The question remains: can you maintain this delicate equilibrium? Can you continue to be just friends with Laura, knowing all that you do about her, feeling all that you feel for her? The answer is yet to be seen, and only time will tell.

What about Juliette?
