A costly mistake

The rest of your shift was pretty uneventful. You were getting the hang of things behind the counter and having your hair in a ponytail kept any more mishaps. Things seemed to be running smoothly, you learned how to make most of the drinks and even made some good tips. You were feeling good about yourself until Ms. DeMorgan returned.

“Hey guys, it seems that we had a guest leave a really negative review on yelp and Facebook. Something about getting hair in his coffee. Is this valid? The posts already have multiple comments from people saying they are never coming back. Who can explain what happened?”

You look at your feet before saying “it...it was my fault. One of my hairs must have fallen off. I am so sorry. But Lily was able to refund the customer and gave him a gift card. I don’t know why he is so mad.”

You feel Ms. DeMorgan’s eyes piercing through you as she states “that is completely unacceptable. I sent you an email explicitly detailing that your hair must be kept back, under a hat or in a hair net at all times. I fully expect to be compensated for the damages or...I will just simply fail you. Also, why are you wearing girl’s clothes?”

“I had a mishap when I was washing dishes. I dropped one of the coffee machines and I spilt coffee on my clothes so Lily gave me her workout gear.”

Ms. DeMorgan quickly brushes past you to the back kitchen. She returns holding the broken coffee machine and states “do you know how much money you have already cost me today? You better figure out a way to pay me back.”

With that she turned and stormed into her office leaving you there near tears. Lily put her arm around your shoulders and told you, “hey, it’s going to be alright. I’ll talk to her to figure out the final price and you most likely can cover it with your pay and tips.”

With a glum expression on your face, you looked at her and said, “the issue is this isn’t a job this is my internship for school. Because this also counts as credits the internship has a very small stipend that I get some halfway through and the rest at the end.”

“I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize. Well the good news is you did pretty good in tips today so if you keep that up I’m sure you will get what you need. In the mean time I’ll make you another soy latte. My treat.”
