A converso family that may not be so convertida

As you stroll around the island, something comes to your attention. You're away from the main settlement, in the more sparsely populated but not wild outlying areas. You hear a strange language being hummed or sang. You know it's not Portuguese, so at first you thought it was perhaps a Flemish colonist. Still, your curiosity was piqued, so you followed the sound.

The trail of noise led you to a small hut on the edge of the settled area, no other habitation being in sight. Realizing that you might not be welcome on the land of anybody who took these pains to be alone, you crouch down and walk slowly. Walking through the tall grass, you sidle up to the window and look in. What you see shocks you.

Inside, the hut is filled with Jewish symbols, and there stands a bearded Rabbi reading his forbidden tome to the people in front of him! Ever since their expulsion alongside the Muslim Moors, only those who converted were allowed to stay on Iberian lands. Rumors of conversos returning to their original religion were a dime a dozen, but now you're seeing it for yourself. This is explicitly illegal, and grounds for exile from the colony.
