Chapter 45 by SkyDreamer SkyDreamer

Can the fairy make it!?

A brief respite is no time to get careless!

Digit glanced back to the combat unfolding below her rooftop vantage point. She couldn't tell how long it would last, but it should at least prove a substantial distraction for both parties for the time being, especially with the second spider that'd crawled out from somewhere. It was disconcerting that she hadn't noticed it before, but she avoided dwelling on the possible consequences that could've come from that.

She then looked again at the ring. While she couldn't precisely determine its value, it didn't seem to show any signs of corrosion, so there was a good chance it might be real gold at least. Whether or not that would be worth a damn out here, who knew, but at the very least it could be another object to channel her magic onto should the need arise.

She picked it up, but before she could even consider her next course of action, she felt a wave of magical energy travel up her arm! Shit, enchanted! Please don't be cursed please don't be...

The energy reached her shoulder and spread throughout her entire body before she'd even had time to properly regret her carelessness. She could sense it lingering on her skin. It felt... protective.

The effect only lasted a moment before fading. Enchanted rings, she knew, only worked properly when they were equipped. Experimentally, she put it back down and moved her hand away slightly. Not stuck to her. Not cursed, probably... phew.

Digit folded her arms and pondered. If it was indeed a buff ring, it would likely be invaluable to her survival. But how could she use it...?

Another glance to the battle. Still ongoing, for now. Digit didn't want to squander this opportunity by wasting too much time. She knew she could theoretically squeeze her body through the ring and set it on her hips like a belt, but she'd rather not risk getting stuck while still surrounded by enemies. A job for later, then.

She grabbed the ring again, shivering slightly as the magic tickled over her skin, and headed over to the side of the cabin. She dropped back down to the windowsill directly opposite from the dirtied window, and did her best to keep her eye on the fight from the glimpses she could catch through the front windows.

The wolf-girl was still giving birth, and didn't look likely to be done any time soon. But Digit was pretty much tapped-out of tricks she could pull to help her. Honestly, it was miraculous things had even gone so well this far! She considered trying to communicate with the wolf-girl, but any distraction from her labour would probably just be detrimental.

Digit flew back up to the roof again, keeping an inconspicuous watch over the conflict. She considered her options, of which two presented themselves: flee while they were all distracted, or stick around and stay hidden until the fight resolved itself.

The fight, in turn, had two obvious outcomes. If the kobolds won, the spiders would likely be dead, and there'd be no way of dealing with the kobolds unless they left of their own volition. If the spiders won, the kobolds would probably be webbed-up and fucked, keeping both groups fully occupied. She couldn't believe it'd come to this, but Digit was actually rooting for the spiders!

As an afterthought, she realised that the cloth flavouring had now served its purpose. She didn't want to risk it luring any more horny creatures in its direction... but it could still prevent the kobolds' sensitive noses from rooting out herself or the wolf-girl. Best to leave the enchantment on for now.

Digit decided she could afford to wait, at least until one of the fighting groups got a clear upper-hand. She scanned the edge of the clearing for Mordekai... if he was still there, he could be a good escape vehicle to keep in mind.

(Perception check on ring: 19)

(1 action point: move back and forth between roof & window)

If that darn elk's moved now, of all times...
