Over two decades ago.
A beautiful day outside.
Birds were singing, flowers in full bloom, basking in the sun. And yet, somthing was wrong. Mother looked off into the distance, wearing an expression her child didn't recognize. Twas a long buildup of feelings any and all would stuggle to describe. Until, the child built up the courage to ask; "What's wrong, Mother?"
Mother wearily turned to her daughter, lifted her up and held her tight. Mother asked the child what they knew of duty, of righteousness, of the importance of doing good for the world, all the while voice cracking. "What are you saying? Why Mother, what are you..." the child asked, growing confused and scared. Mother only held her daughter tighter, then sat the child down, wiping both their welling tears away. Stern expression and steady voice masking pain and sorrow, Mother said to daughter;
"Look at me, my beautiful girl, and listen carefully. There are things in this world that you must fight for. Whether it be for beliefs, for the people, for the ones closest to our hearts, there will always be a fight. A fight worth fighting. A fight against injustice and cruelty and whatever else the world may hold. For the good of humanity.
I have found my fight. I have found my cause. I have fought with all my might. But the fight is not over. I do not know when I will called to fight again. But when the call comes, I must follow. I must fight for humanity, for the country, for your father, and most importantly, for you, my precious daughter. Do you understand?"
The child understood what Mother said. They understood perfectly. But they did not understand why. Young Kaguya cried out, "Don't leave me, Mother! Don't go off i-in to fight some war! Please don't leave me... please..."
The child grabbed her mother, holding her as tight as she could. Tears streamed down both's cheeks. Mother held daughter in reciprocation, silently weeping at her daughter's wails of fear and sorrow.
"Listen to me, wonderful child. I do not want to leave you. Just as much as you don't want me to leave you. But no matter how much pain it causes us, there are certain things that most be done, for ignoring such duties will cause far more pain than we can imagine. And mark my words, no matter what I face, not matter what dangers come before me. I will come back. I will make sure we see each other again. Do you understand, Kaguya Fortuna?"
Kaguya understood. Kaguya hated it. But Kaguya understood. Kaguya fought past her tears just long enough to get out one simple word; "Promise?" Mother responded with a kiss on the forehead and one simple word; "Promise." The mother and daughter held each other close as they mourned one who's fight was far from over. Mother took daughter in tender grasp, lifted her up, slowly meandered to a more comfortable location. As Mother took a leisurely stroll to her destination, taking in the mansion's scenery with crying daughter in hand, she spoke one final time.
"I have only one ask of you, my sweet. Only one hope, only one thing I want you to promise me. Please, find your fight. Find something worth doing, find people worth protecting. The world is too vast for anyone to live life without purpose. There are too many people in this world for anyone to live alone. Please, my sweet. Do not allow yourself to wither away alone. Can you do that for me, Kaguya?"
"Of course, Mother."
Not another word was spoken. There was no need. They understood each other perfectly. Mother arrived at the master bedroom. Mother got onto the bed. Kaguya nestled herself under the warm blanket, Mother doing the same. The pair shared a sense of sadness, hoping for the moment to never end, that the next day would never come. But eventually, the two fell asleep in each others arms.
And that was that.
