Chapter 8 by The_Magician The_Magician

What happens next?

A band of Trinity Knights enters and makes an announcement

Suddenly your attention is drawn to the main door of the inn. Four knights, wearing gleaming plate-and-mail and helmets, armed with long halberds and shields, and with long swords sheathed at their sides, march into the room with a great deal of thumping and rattling. All eyes are finally drawn away from you and toward the knights.

One of the knights, apparently the leader, steps forward while the other three form a rigid line behind him, blocking the door.

"Your attention, please!" shouts the lead knight in a commanding tone. "It has come to the attention of the Knights of the Trinity that a certain knave, a man of notorious villainy, of base dishonor, and of monstrous cruelty, has been seen in your fair village of Lastredast."

An outcry resounds from the patrons as they turn to their fellows in a mixture of surprise, disbelief and concern.

Pounding the butt-end of his halberd vigorously against the floor boards, the lead knight resumes his announcement. "Attention! Your attention, please!" he commands. After a short commotion the inn again falls silent.

"It has been mentioned that this man has been seen in the vicinity of this very inn," he says, starting a new round of commotion. This time, the knight simply carries on, raising his voice so that it may be heard over the crowd. "It has been suggested," he says, with an emphatic pause which draws the attention of the patrons once again, "that he may have very well taken up residence in this very inn!"

At this, the volume of the general hue and cry rises to a pitch of general distress. All four knights begin pounding on the floorboards with their halberds, creating a tremendous clamor which eventually subdues the crowd.

"I would like to assure you," continues the commander, "that every possible precaution has been taken to ensure the swift and effective capture of this ruffian. You are in no danger. While the Knights of the Trinity guard your beds and your homes, you have nothing to fear." This reassurance has the desired effect and the general level of distress seems to visibly lessen. "However," he intones forcefully, "we will need your assistance in this matter to ensure the speediest and most thorough apprehension of this scoundrel. I implore you, citizens of Lastredast, and travellers from yonder realms: if you have any information regarding the location of this blackguard please bring it to our attention. For your own sake, for the sake of your fellow citizens and travellers, and for the sake of the Three Kingdoms."

He pauses, surveying the crowd before continuing. "And in case any of you fears that the sovereigns of the Three Kingdoms may be forgetful of the loyal and dutiful aid which you have shown them in pursuance of this matter, you may rest assured that there is a generous reward for any information leading to this man's capture." On hearing this, the crowd resumes its animated conversation, though this time speculating with excitement.

"However," the commander concludes in an ominous tone, "make no attempt to apprehend this villain yourself. He is a most cunning and dangerous man and has been responsible for the murders of many of your betters. Leave his apprehension to us, the Knights of the Trinity, and give your friends and loved ones no cause for untimely grief."

With this, the knights turn and march out of the inn with a loud and confident clatter. As soon as the door swings shut, the patrons unleash the full **** of their tongues and gesticulations, creating havoc, if not a general panic, in the inn. The wench bringing your dinner, who had all this time been standing in rapt attention to the knights, holding your food above the head of one of the seated patrons, is suddenly jostled by this man when he suddenly and unexpectedly decides to stand up, sending your food to the floor with a splatter.

Zefendel touches your elbow and leans forward, putting his mouth close to your ear so that you can hear him better over the ruckus. "I think we should move to another room, so that we can continue our conversation in peace," he says. "I fear this crowd might grow ugly once the ale starts to flow freely again. Meet me in the private room at the top of the stairs, the one at the end of the hall, closest to the front of the inn. I'll have one of the girls bring you dinner and meet you there after I have spoken to Kellic." You nod, seeing little alternative. He hands you a key under the table and gets up, pushing his way through the crowd.

What do you do?
