Chapter 19 by Manbear Manbear

Talk to who?

A Templar Captain

"We'd better talk to the Templars." Winlay felt her heart sink, if the Templars took Mika for questioning, who knows if she would ever see her bubbly blonde friend again. On the other hand, she wasn't even sure if Mika was her friend. Sister Margaret must have sensed her confusion because she took Winlay's hand in hers and gave it a quick squeeze.

"Not just any Templar, Sister Winlay." Margaret's matter of fact tone helped sooth Winlay, it was almost like Initiates came to her with stories like this every other week. "The Templar Captain I have in mind is a decent man, he'll know better than you or I how to handle this."

So, less than thirty minutes later, Winlay was waiting in Sister Margaret's small workshop when the doorway was completely blocked by the broad shoulders and white cloak of a Templar Captain. The man's blue eyes took Winlay's breath away as she climbed nervously to her feet. Even standing, Winlay had to look up at the man who was more than 25 centimeters taller than her. Thankfully, Sister Margaret was there to do the taking, because Winlay hadn't felt this tongue-tied since she was a young girl.

"Adam, Sister Winlay here has made a disquieting discovery that I think you should hear about." Sister Margaret made sure the door to her workshop was securely latched and even slid a bar down to make sure they would not be interrupted before turning her attention back to Winlay. "Go on Sister, tell Adam about what you found under Mika's bed."

Winlay did her best to lay out the facts that she knew about the burlap sac she found hidden under Mika's bed. She explained how the robes could be reversed to go from the greys of an initiate to white complete with a Harald's cords and the knife with its vault tech blade. She finished with a careful description of the scroll case and its wax seal.

"What do you think this means, Sister?" Winlay was a little surprised that a Templar, that a Templar Captain, would be interested in her opinion. From her limited interactions with the men who guarded the tithing caravan that brought her to Telnon, these men never asked for anyone's input. As much as Winlay wanted to protect her new friend, she couldn't lie for her.

"I fear, Captain, that Mika is an assassin, sent from Cryn." Her brown eyes flickered from Adam's to Sister Margaret's and then back to the Templar's again, "I don't know why she's here, but I'm afraid she's going to do something awful."

The Templar Captain's face tightened into a dark mask, but Winlay could see the vein in his temple pulsing with blood as the man stared down at her ominously. It was Sister Margaret who broke the silence.

"See, Adam?" Margaret turned to the Templar with what looked like a twinkle in her eye, "I told you this one was pretty sharp."

What's going on?
