A Seed of Doubt
The lab was quiet, save for the faint hum of the ether seeping through the cracks. Sanctioned work was boring, but Elorae had already had one slip-up that week by allowing her curiosity to get the better of her, and so she was strictly adhering to the expectations of her superiors. Testing, recording, repeating. Over and over. Elorae knew she could do so much more, that her abilities were so much bigger than her job allowed, but that was exactly why she was in so much trouble.
She could still feel the faint pulse of her escaped experiment through one of the cracks on the floor. The marker she had left on it was reliable. Only she could feel it, only she would know how to look. It told her where it was, but not much else. There were ways, more dangerous ways, to gain more information. There might a time where that was needed, but her delving into that realm had not indicated any significant damage, and so she had decided to leave it, to hope that it would work itself out. The alternative would potentially expose her, an idea that terrified. her.
The door behind her slid open. Without turning, she already knew who it was. The air itself seemed to tighten, sharpening at the edges, a sign that Vaelith had stepped through.
"Vaelith," she said, not in greeting, but an acknowledgement of her defeat. She kept her hands steady on her workbench, willing them not to tremble.
Vaelith moved with the smoothness of someone who knew he was unwelcome but didn’t care.
"It's time," he said, "Tomorrow is our opportunity, and I will require your services now."
She exhaled sharply through her nose, setting down her tools.
"Tomorrow? That's too soon."
He leaned against the nearest support beam, his image flickering slightly as the ether responded to him. Fragments of past lovers ghosted over his own. Some familiar, some not. She refused to let her eyes linger.
"You have twenty-four hours," he said. "I want an idea seed, and I want it perfect."
Elorae turned to face him fully, "And if I refuse?"
Vaelith smiled, slow and cold, "There are other ways to address your transgression. More formal ways."
She swallowed, forcing herself to hold his gaze, "What exactly is it that you want? An idea seed doesn't just throw together. It takes finesse, intent."
He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Doubt. A deep, creeping doubt. Not a flash of rebellion, not a spark of resistance, something quieter. A thought that burrows deep and festers. A doubt that starts small in one mind and spreads, unnoticed, until it’s everywhere. Until the Registry, the Regulators, all of them are questioned. All of them, except me."
Elorae’s stomach twisted. "You want a slow poison."
"I want certainty." He reached out, brushing his fingers over the edge of her worktable, disturbing the misty residue left by her last experiment. "That’s what an idea is, isn’t it? A certainty strong enough to become reality."
She clenched her fists. "You know what this will do."
"Yes." His expression didn’t change.
"It will unravel everything."
He tilted his head. "Good."
Her breath hitched, and for a moment, she entertained the thought of refusing. But then she thought of the alternative. Of what would happen if Vaelith turned her in.
She had seen them before, those who had been rewritten. Perfect smiles, perfect compliance, minds hollowed out until they were nothing but echoes of themselves. Their eyes still carried ghosts of who they had been, but their voices only knew one phrase: Tell me what you need.
Elorae shuddered.
"I’ll do it," she said, voice tight. "Now get out."
Vaelith chuckled, stepping back toward the door. "That’s my Elorae."
"I am not yours."
His eyes gleamed. "We’ll see."
And then he was gone, leaving behind nothing but the thick, cloying scent of ether and the weight of the impossible task ahead.
Elorae sat back down, staring at the tools before her.
Twenty-four hours.
And then?
One way or another, her world would never be the same.
