A Longer Instrument May Help

EPISODE 1: This starts with Dorothea and Celia slowly disrobing until they are totally naked. Celia gets out their late mother’s jewellery box, asking which they should wear for a dinner the next day. While Celia tries on almost everything shown in a montage close up of her head and torso, Dorothea takes a cross. They kneel and pray as directed by Dorothea, put on their nighties and go to bed.

At the dinner party, Sir James, keen to impress the elder Miss Brooke endorses her plans to improve the living conditions for her uncle’s tenants. However Dorothea and an academic older guest, Casaubon, really hit it off leaving James nonplussed so he turns attention to his sister. Mr Brooke rejects the plans but Sir James says he would like to go ahead with them on his own estate.

Dorothea visits Sir James and Celia insists on coming along either though she is bored stupid by the plans. Whenever Dorothea’s attention was away, Celia behaves provocatively towards James. One day when Dorothea is visiting Casaubon and learning about his academic masterwork, Celia tells her uncle that Dorothea forgot to give Sir James some plans and he lets her go on her own.

Once there Celia bends over the table and grabs James’s hands pulling him towards her backside.
“Sir James, have you more interesting plans for me? I am not, sir, my virtuous sister. There is something I would have you examine but it is well hidden. Could you please find it for me?”

Sir James may not have been sharpest tool in the box but he got Celia’s message loud and clear. Up and over went her dress, up and over went her petticoats to reveal her concealed treasure. He slipped his hand between her legs and felt her sex.
“Oh Sir James, it’s deep inside. Perhaps a longer instrument may help”. He dropped his trousers undid the button on his underwear and gently pushed until he was able to enter her. As they were both inexperienced he did not last long and came inside her. He tells he wants to marry her.

Casaubon proposes to Dorothea via a letter to her uncle and she, to the disappointment of the rest or family, accepts. Sir James continues to work with Dorothea, but enjoys the days when she is indisposed even more.

COMMENT: Nobody really complained about the opening scene being gratuitous this time, because it was following the book but with justifiable nudity. The episode was praised for its quality and it was nice to give Kara her first proper sex scene. There was a complaint by feminists who said that women’s drawers would not be quite so revealing, but all the costume designer had done was make the material tighter to accentuate the split at the front and back.
