Chapter 6
by Nemo of Utopia
NEXT: A Knighting Or A Dressing-Down...
A Knighting
Dress:
A2: the one that makes your tail swing like a stripper.
Entourage:
B1: Baroness Grizlada, the King's sister.
B2: Shinerva, the violet girl.
B4: Baron Volgemund, the King's brother.
The Next Chapter:
As you are trying on the dresses in the floor-length mirror that has been provided, two kobold women come into the room. One is golden scaled, much like King-Under-Hill Izordios, and the other has most unusual scales, being a bright purple sort of color.
"Hello?!" You ask, momentarily taken aback by these two women's presence.
"Hello," the gold scaled one begins, her tone polite but failing to fully conceal her bitter resentment at being here, "I am Baroness Grizlada and this is your new chambermaid Shinerva. We are here to help you chose your court garb and get dressed," Baroness Grizlada explains in formal and stilted Draconic.
Rather than disrobe in front of them you decide to go with the dress you were just trying on. "I've already selected this one," you tell them, and Grizlada makes a 'tch!' Sound in her throat, but they help you finish donning it properly, and you feel a lot better. Unlike some of the others, it doesn't pinch or bind anywhere, except around your hips. There it is clearly built to lift your tail and **** it to sway as you walk...
"I feel like an erotic dancer wearing this thing," you remark, and Shinerva giggles for a moment, but Baroness Grizlada shushes her.
"These dresses were designed to accentuate your beauty, something that would distinctly also be the case for an Exotic Dancer's garments," Baroness Grizlada replies, her tone strained.
Once you are fully dressed, Baroness Grizlada calls out to a third person, "Baron Volgemund, you may enter now!" She says, and a male kobold strides in, who you could swear was the King, except that he carries himself completely differently and wears utterly different clothes.
King-Under-Hill Izordios has the stance and bearing of a soldier/warrior, this man is different. He moves with the practiced caution and alertness of a duelist and bears at his side the rapier and main-gauche of someone from that profession.
"Viermaes, allow me to introduce my younger brother, Baron Volgemund. He is to be your 'Attorney' and captain of your guards until someone more suitable is found," Baroness Grizlada explains.
"A pleasure to make your acquaintance My Lady, I am ever at your Service..." Baron Volgemund explains and lays a gentle and chaste kiss across the back of your hand.
You are confused by the sudden entourage, and decide to ask what's going on. "Baron, Baroness, why do I need a Captain of The Guard, ladies maid, and so forth? I am not a noblewoman, and thus far in my life, I've been able to handle my own affairs..." You say.
They both smile, as though at a private joke, and merely reply, "You will see."
See you do, soon enough, as after a breakfast of precooked leftovers from last nights feast you are taken into where Izordios and Shabana are holding court. They sit in judgment on several local disputes, two farmers arguing over a prize lamb, a question of a baker's weights, and some esoteric conflict between an herb-woman and a wizard over the exact properties of a sprig of ivy she'd sold him. All that is pretty boring, but then you are called up to stand before the Count yourself.
"Count Izordios and Countess Shabana call the dragoness Viermaes to stand before the court!" The herald announces, and you are surprised, but rise from the back bench and walk forward to stand before the dais.
"Viermaes, you are a dragoness much like myself and have many great advantages of body, mind, and spirit. We are thus minded to offer you the rank of Knight Inheritor over one of our smaller fiefs, of which we have 4 for you to chose from. Should you accept this duty you would be our vassal and serve us in the traditional capacities of a Knight, dispensing justice, ensuring good harvests, and maintaining a levy of troops to be called upon in time of war. Select your fief now, then go stand vigil and meditate on if you can perform this task, you will then give your answer during the evening court..." Countess Shabana tells you and a scroll outlining your options is presented.
You pick:
A: The Fief Of...
A1: Saint Cognatus Crossing: a small farming village near the wastes.
A2: Alexandretta: A market town that has just barely reached the size of a 'city'.
A3: Izingdust: A young dwarven holding.
A4: Vicar's Swamp: A small marshland settlement built on pilings so the houses don't flood.
B: This Fief's Three Main Advantages Are...
B1: it has a castle to retreat to in times of danger.
B2: one or more wizards/sorcerers make their homes here.
B3: the Fief is situated along a major trade route.
B4: there are extensive deposits of valuable minerals under and around the Fief.
B5: The fief has a vibrant economy.
B6: the fief is home to a mercenary company.
B7: No Advantage. (But also one less drawback...)
C: the fief's two main disadvantages are...
C1: It is riddled with crime.
C2: its people resent outside authority.
C3: the economy has collapsed.
C4: there is a major monster lair nearby.
C5: the fief has repeatedly been a victim of disease outbreaks.
C6: no disadvantage. (Select only if you picked no advantage above.)
