Chapter 2 by SchlockTheMonkey SchlockTheMonkey

Who's asking for help?

A Klingon colony

A woman's voice, somewhat attenuated and statical, came over the bridge. "--in urgent need of assistance. Please respond. Repeat, this is Lequbos. To any starship within transmission range: we are in urgent need of assistance. Please respond."

The accent sounds Klingon to you, but there shouldn't be any Klingons out here. While technically neutral space, this sector has for the past several years been considered part of the Federation's sphere of influence.

"This is Captain James Kirk of the Federation starship Enterprise," you respond. "What is the nature of your emergency?"

You hear what might be a sigh of relief -- hard to tell through the static. "This is Governor Dara of Lequbos," the woman replies. "Enterprise, please hurry."

"I repeat, what is the nature of your emergency?" you ask.

"Not over open subspace," Governor Dara replies. "It's vital that I explain to you in person. This is a matter of--" the message fades out into static.

"Sorry, sir," says Lt. Uhura, "I've lost the signal."

"Spock," you say, "I'm not aware of any Klingon colonies in this sector."

Your first officer leans over his computer terminal, examining data. "Officially, there are none. However, the Klingons have been known to establish unofficial settlements on resource-rich planets or potential bases near valuable trade routes."

"Yes," you say, "but those colonies are under military government, and the Klingon fleet doesn't appoint women to high positions."

"An interesting anomaly," Spock agrees.

"How long to reach Lequbos?" you ask.

Lt. Uhura feeds Chekhov the transmission data and he calculates a course to the source of the signal. "Thirty hours at maximum cruise, sir," he reports.

"Lay in the course and engage, Warp 6," you order, and Sulu speeds the ship towards this mysterious colony.

"Keptin," Chekhov protests, "this is an obvious trap!"

Is Chekhov right?
