Chapter 24 by lightsout

Tektonia’s flap fell shut, leaving Winston in the chair with the faint smell of her still clinging to his clothes. He had not yet decided whether to stand when one of the interior curtains lifted and Saruka returned from wherever Hippolyta had sent her to wait. Without ceremony, she crossed the tent and set both hands on his shoulders, her grip sure from the first touch. Thumbs found the knots the chair had left behind and began working them in slow circles, drawing a breath from him before he could gather enough presence of mind to object. Across the table, Hippolyta watched with quiet approval and made no move to interfere.

“You are carrying half the table in these muscles, my king,” Saruka said, pressing deeper until Winston gave up on standing and settled back into the chair. “Sit. Let me take some of it.”

Warm palms travelled across the top of his back and worked down around his shoulder blades, finding tension he had stopped noticing sometime during his conversation with Tektonia. The skill in Saruka’s hands made it obvious she had done this many times before. Usefulness did not keep those hands honest. Fingertips drifted where no knot required them, tracing his spine, lingering at his sides, slipping just under the edge of his rumpled cloth to stroke bare skin along his ribs as if the massage had only been the excuse.

By the time her thumbs pressed beside his spine and worked another stubborn knot loose, Winston’s head had tipped forward and the ache through his hips had eased, replaced by a different heat climbing under her touch. Saruka leaned close enough for her breath to warm the side of his neck, then let her nails drag lightly up toward his nape, unhurried and entirely at ease with the liberty she had taken. “Better?”

“A lot,” Winston admitted, leaning into her hands.

Though he could not see Saruka behind him, Winston could hear the smirk in her voice. “That was not difficult to accomplish.” The pleased note made him glance across the table toward Hippolyta, only to find the same amusement waiting there. The Regent had turned her attention back to the meal, though the faint curve at the corner of her mouth made it obvious she had heard every word and had no intention of discouraging Saruka.

Saruka moved higher along the base of his neck, finding a tight band of muscle and working into it with patient circles of her thumbs. “You tightened the moment the mason began talking about walls.”

“I did not,” Winston said, though the denial weakened when one thumb settled precisely into the place responsible and pressed until his shoulders finally gave beneath her hands. “Fine. Maybe a little.”

“So she frightened you.”

“I was more concerned as she offered me a city before dinner.”

“Tektonia is one of those who builds things when she is excited.” Saruka shifted her grip before he could answer, one palm steadying his shoulder while her fingers worked deeper beside his neck. The pressure found another ache he had not realized was there. A slow stroke followed it, unnecessary and warm, tracing the line of his nape until Winston’s head tilted almost willingly to give her better access.

After everything that had already happened with Tektonia, her interest in him was hardly mysterious. What he had failed to appreciate was that sleeping with someone and immediately planning his permanent residence apparently belonged to the same broad expression of enthusiasm. “So palaces are how she shows affection?”

Across the table, Hippolyta looked up with amusement already gathering in her expression. “For Tektonia? Quite possibly. You should be grateful she settled for offering you one before deciding you required an entire city.”

A laugh escaped Winston, loosened almost as much by Saruka’s hands as by the absurdity of the answer. Her fingers had reached the stubborn tension where his neck met his shoulder and were worrying it away with enough precision that keeping track of the conversation required more effort than it should have. A nail dragged lightly under the edge of his collar, then her palm spread wide again as if the tease had never happened. Somewhere in the last few days, being desired by an Amazon mason had become inseparable from discussing fortifications over dinner. “I still have no idea what I am supposed to build first.”

“That is why you asked questions,” Hippolyta replied, reaching for her cup.

“I mostly listened while everyone else decided I needed walls.”

“Listening is an underrated royal skill.”

The quiet chuckle near Winston’s ear belonged to Saruka, who had already moved to the opposite shoulder before the first had fully stopped aching. “The Lady Regent used to return from council exactly like this,” she said, finding another knot with such immediate certainty that Winston suspected his body was becoming easier for her to read than he was comfortable admitting. Her breath stayed at his neck while she worked, close enough that the massage and the attention could no longer be told apart.

That caught Winston’s attention more effectively than the pressure did. “You did this for her?”

“Frequently,” Saruka answered, her hands continuing their slow work beneath his shoulder blade.

Hippolyta lifted her cup across the table with the air of someone hearing an old habit brought up for public inspection. “Against my better judgment,” she said, though the amusement in her voice undercut the complaint. “It is pleasing to see you enjoy it more openly than I ever did.”

Laughing near Winston’s ear, Saruka said, “You complained often enough, Lady Regent, but you also leaned back whenever I found the right place.” Her thumb pressed with practiced accuracy into a stubborn knot, and the tension gave so suddenly that Winston’s shoulders sagged before he could stop them. “There,” she added, satisfaction warming the word.

The relief made him understand why Hippolyta had tolerated this particular attention for so many years. “I’m beginning to sympathize with her.”

Across the table, Hippolyta’s smile remained firmly in place. “That is dangerous.”

“With the massage,” Winston clarified as Saruka’s hands moved on to the next tight muscle.

“Less dangerous,” Hippolyta allowed, amusement deepening in her expression while Saruka laughed softly behind him.

The exchange came too easily to be new. Years of familiarity sat underneath it, and Winston could almost see the older pattern taking shape around him: Saruka standing behind Hippolyta after difficult councils, reading strain from the queen’s posture before she admitted to it, listening while she complained about captains, petitioners, and whatever fresh argument had followed her out of the council chamber. Somewhere along the way, Saruka had learned where those burdens gathered and how to work them loose. Now the same practiced attention moved across Winston’s shoulders with equal confidence, carrying an intimacy that had once belonged entirely to another life.

Now that same practiced attention had settled on Winston. The realization tightened something in him before he could decide whether it belonged to guilt, embarrassment, or simple unease, and Saruka noticed the change almost at once. Her hands slowed over his shoulders, then one thumb pressed into the new tension with the confidence of someone who had already learned how quickly his body betrayed his thoughts.

“There. Again.”

Winston let out a low groan as the pressure found exactly the right place. “What?”

“You tightened.” Saruka sounded far too pleased with the discovery, her hands continuing their work while she waited for him to explain himself.

“Maybe I am thinking.”

“That seems to be what causes it.” The answer came in a lazy drawl, and although Winston could not see her expression from where he sat, he had the distinct impression that her attention had wandered somewhere considerably lower than his shoulders.

Across the table, Hippolyta lifted her cup to hide another smile. The gesture failed completely. She was enjoying the exchange far too much to interrupt it, and Saruka seemed to know it, judging by the quiet satisfaction in the way her fingers resumed their slow path across Winston’s back.

Winston let his head fall back far enough to look up at Saruka. The calm concentration on her face suggested she had already decided his body was a problem she understood better than he did. “Do you intend to do this every time I think too hard?”

“Whenever you need it.” Her hands shifted to the base of his neck, thumbs pressing in with enough confidence to make the answer sound less like an offer than an arrangement already settled.

“And if I decide I do not?”

That earned him a brief pause. Saruka considered the question while her fingers remained spread across his shoulders, then the corner of her mouth curved. “Then I will decide whether you are mistaken.”

For a moment Winston could only look at her. Indignation would have been easier to maintain if she had not found another ache he had failed to notice and started working it loose at the same time. Across the table, Hippolyta finally gave up any attempt at restraint and laughed.

“You gave her far too much confidence.”

“I noticed.”

The accusation did nothing to disturb her. With the matter apparently settled in her own mind, the massage resumed as if Winston had already lost the argument. “The Lady Regent used to make me work much harder for permission to fuss over her.”

A cup rose with exaggerated dignity from across the table. “That was because I possessed discipline.”

“Our king appears to possess less resistance.”

“I’m sitting right here.”

“Yes, my king.” Satisfaction warmed the title, and the slow pressure of Saruka’s hands made it difficult for Winston to decide whether he was more annoyed by the teasing or by how effective it was. Hippolyta’s laughter only deepened when his shoulders finally loosened beneath Saruka’s fingers, giving both women all the confirmation they seemed to need.

Beneath the humor, Winston could still remember the woman Saruka had been only hours earlier. She had entered his presence struggling to hide her contempt, treating service to him as an extension of the duty she owed Hippolyta and little more. Now she anticipated discomfort before he mentioned it, teased him without hesitation, and worked tension from his shoulders with the pleased concentration of someone who had claimed the task for herself. The change should have made her seem unfamiliar. Instead, what unsettled him was how much of her remained recognizably the same.

The skill in her hands had always belonged to her. So had the attentiveness, the habit of noticing strain before the person carrying it admitted anything was wrong, and the quiet satisfaction she took in caring well for someone important to her. Winston had created none of those qualities during the bath. What he had altered was the direction in which they flowed, and another slow pass of Saruka’s hands across his shoulders made that distinction increasingly difficult to ignore.

“You did this for Hippolyta because you loved her,” he said, feeling the pressure shift as she worked along the base of his neck.

“Of course.” The answer came easily, without any interruption in the massage.

“And now you enjoy doing it for me.”

“Very much, my king.” Her thumbs pressed into another tight muscle with the same certainty as before, and the lack of hesitation in her voice disturbed him more than any awkwardness would have.

His attention moved across the table toward Hippolyta. Some part of him had expected to find discomfort there, perhaps jealousy or some trace of regret at watching an intimacy once reserved for her settle so naturally onto someone else. Instead, fond amusement rested in the Regent’s expression as she watched Saruka work.

“Does that bother you?” Winston asked.

Hippolyta understood where his attention had gone. “Seeing her care for you?” At his nod, she set her cup down and let her hand slip from the table into her lap. Fingers gathered the white cloth of her gown and pressed between her thighs, slow enough that Winston could not mistake the motion for rest. “No. It stirs me. She cared for me well for many years, and watching that same devotion turned toward you warms me in a place council never does. Especially when you insist on carrying every new responsibility as though someone has stacked masonry across your back.”

There was no strain in the answer for Winston to catch hold of. Saruka’s hands on him pleased her. His comfort pleased her. The arrangement itself seemed to satisfy both women, and Hippolyta’s fingers kept moving under the table, stroking herself with the same calm she used for bread and law. The results were right in front of him: laughter, loyalty, appetite, and two people who appeared entirely content with where they stood.

The path that had brought them there remained harder to look at.

Another tightening beneath Saruka’s hands betrayed him before he could hide it. Her fingers paused over the muscle, then settled into it with knowing pressure. “Still thinking?”

“Unfortunately.”

“That explains the problem.” Satisfaction warmed her voice as she began working the knot loose. “Then I suppose I am not finished with you yet.”

A reluctant breath escaped Winston as the tension gradually gave beneath her fingers. Across the table, Hippolyta reached for the bread with her free hand and kept the other where it was, stroking herself while she watched Saruka work, as settled as if the evening had always included this. For the moment, Winston decided that untangling the moral structure of his kingdom could wait until after dinner. His shoulders had already reached their own conclusion.

Saruka’s hands left Winston’s shoulders and slipped around his ribs, palms opening on his chest, fingers spreading over the rumpled cloth as if the knots there needed the same attention. She stepped in as she did it. Soft weight settled against his back, her breasts pressing full and warm through fur and tunic, rising with her breath each time she leaned to reach farther across him.

The massage lost its last pretence of being only useful. Thumbs brushed his sternum. Fingertips mapped the shape of him, slow, then found the edge of his collar and slid under it, skin to skin, while she kept her chest fitted to his spine. Heat soaked through the cloth at his back. Every circle of her hands pulled her closer, and the soft give of her breasts followed, a steady, deliberate crush that made it harder to sit still in the chair Tektonia had left him in.

Across the table Hippolyta’s hand did not leave her lap. Her fingers kept their unhurried stroke beneath the white gown, eyes on the pair of them, mouth curved as Saruka worked Winston’s chest and pressed herself against him like the work required it.

“Breathe,” Saruka stated near his ear, and her palms dragged down his chest again, slower this time, the weight of her breasts heavy on his back as she took the liberty and did not ask whether he wanted more of it.

Saruka did not rush the next pass. Her hands stayed on Winston’s chest, palms dragging down and up again, thumbs brushing over him through the cloth before they slipped back under it and spread warm against bare skin. She shifted behind the chair so both breasts settled more fully against his back, soft and heavy, the press of them following every small movement of her arms.

Another breath left Winston as Saruka’s hands wandered from his shoulders along his ribs and higher, lingering over the beat beneath his chest as though measuring it belonged naturally to the massage. The chair gave him nowhere useful to go, and she took advantage of that without hesitation, leaning close until her mouth hovered near the side of his neck and the whole warm front of her body was fitted to him from shoulder to mid-back.

Across the table, Hippolyta allowed the moment to continue a little longer. Her hand rested loosely in her lap, the diadem steady in her hair, and only when Saruka’s thumbs made another slow circle did she finally set her cup aside. “As pleasant as this is, you have one more guest left, my lord husband. Saruka will still be here when that duty is done. The other will not wait in the outer chamber forever.”

That was enough. The pressure against his chest eased as Saruka withdrew, taking her warmth with her, while Hippolyta rose with the quiet satisfaction of someone whose schedule had survived another interruption. Before the inner curtain lifted, the tent settled briefly around the three of them, holding the remains of dinner, the fading heat in Winston’s shoulders, and the sense that whatever came next had already been arranged.

Winston let out a breath against the pull of Saruka’s hands and found Hippolyta across the table.

“Call them in,” he stated.

Saruka’s palms left his chest. She stepped back from the chair, the warmth of her breasts gone from his spine as quickly as she had put it there. Hippolyta inclined her head, pleased and already moving to the duty, and rose from her seat to send for the guest. The interior curtain had not yet lifted. For a last moment the chamber held only the three of them, the leftover smell of the meal, and the fading heat Saruka had worked into his shoulders.
