A Change of Form, A Change of Fortune
The silence following Walter’s suggestion of "monetizing" was heavy—the kind of thick, suffocating silence that only exists when two people realize they are one bad week away from living in a cardboard box.
Then, that silence was shattered.
The dorm room door didn't just open; it swung wide as if kicked by an invisible force. Leo, Tim’s best friend and the man who lived in a state of perpetual chaos, marched into the room. He wasn't alone—or rather, he was, but his attention was entirely occupied by the frantic, high-pitched voice emanating from the smartphone pressed to his ear.
"But Sarah, you have to be reasonable!" Leo shouted into the phone, stepping over a pile of Tim’s discarded textbooks. "It’s not a matter of being stubborn! It’s about—"
Leo stopped mid-stride. He froze as if he had run straight into an invisible wall.
He was staring directly at Walter. Or rather, he was staring at the beautiful, blonde, naked woman who happened to be Tim’s father.
Tim felt his soul attempt to leave his body. He looked from Leo, whose eyes were wide enough to fall out of his head, to his father—who was currently sitting on a cheap dorm couch without a stitch of clothing to her name.
"Leo!" Tim hissed, his face turning a shade of crimson that suggested imminent combustion. "A little warning? Maybe? Or a knock? Or even just... basic human decency?"
Leo didn't respond. He didn't even seem to breathe. His eyes were fixed on the blonde woman, who was looking at him with an expression of profound, masculine annoyance despite her delicate features.
In his shock, Leo’s thumb slipped against the screen. Click. The call ended.
The silence that followed was deafening as Leo stared, paralyzed, at the gorgeous stranger sitting in Tim's room. Tim, desperate to break the tension and move past the sheer absurdity of the moment, looked at his friend with a pained expression.
"Well?" Tim asked, his voice strained. "Since you walked in mid-sentence... what exactly were you arguing about with Sarah?"
Leo’s eyes darted from Walter's face to her naked form and back again. He swallowed hard, his voice coming out as a breathless, awkward whisper.
"She... she said it wasn't an option," Leo stammered, gesturing vaguely toward the empty air. "She was saying that since she isn't into anal sex, there’s no point in even discussing the 'logistics' of our weekend plans!"
Leo’s gaze drifted from the empty space where Sarah’s voice had just been back to the woman on the couch. The sheer absurdity of his own words—the debate about Sarah’s preferences vs. the reality of this stunning, naked stranger—was making his brain short-circuit.
The argument with Sarah was still ringing in his ears, but the visual before him was much more pressing. He looked at her delicate features, then back to Tim, his eyes wide with a mix of confusion and bewilderment.
"Wait," Leo stammered, his voice cracking slightly as he gestured vaguely toward the couch. "Who... is she?"
Tim closed his eyes for a moment, praying for the strength to endure the next ten minutes of his life. He felt like he was walking a tightrope over a pit of pure social catastrophe.
"That," Tim said, his voice sounding as if it were being squeezed through a narrow straw, "is my father."
The silence that followed was even more profound than the first. It was the sound of Leo’s entire reality shifting on its axis. He looked at her—really looked at her—searching for some trace of Tim's family in the curves and the blonde hair.
"Your... your what?" Leo breathed, his face paling as he processed the statement.
Walter, or rather, the woman who was Walter, rolled her eyes with a practiced, masculine dismissal. She leaned back further on the couch, her expression one of bored patience despite the sheer scandalous nature of her current state.
"Don't look so shocked, kid," she said, her voice carrying that familiar, gravelly authority that Tim had known his entire life. "It’s a temporary transformation. Now, are you going to keep staring like a fish, or are we going to figure out how to pay for this place?"
Leo took a step back, his eyes darting between them as if waiting for the punchline of a joke that wasn't coming. "But... she’s... he’s..."
"He is my father," Tim repeated, rubbing his temples as if trying to physically push the awkwardness out of his skull. "And before you ask—yes, it was a science experiment. Yes, he's currently 'she.' And no, we are not talking about your sex life with Sarah while he's sitting there! Not unless it helps us with our financial struggles." he finished.
"But... she’s... he’s..." Leo stammerically trailed off, his brain struggling to bridge the gap between the gorgeous woman and Tim's father.
Walter looked at Leo—really looked at him—and then looked down at his own beautiful, feminine form. He realized that while being a striking blonde was an incredible feat of physics, having a son’s best friend staring at your nakedness was making the social tension almost unbearable.
"You're right, Leo," Walter said with a wry, masculine smirk. "This is a bit much for a Tuesday afternoon."
With a practiced, efficient motion, Walter pressed a sequence of commands on the iBod. The device humst, emitting a low-frequency vibration that seemed to hum in the very air of the room. A flash of soft, white light enveloped him—or her. For a moment, the silhouette was blurred, a swirling vortex of shifting mass and shifting matter.
As the light dimmed, the blonde woman was gone. In her place sat the rugged, salt-and-pepper-haired man Tim knew as his father, sitting in the same chair, looking exactly as he had before. And he was utterly naked, as before. Though this time, his penis didn't cause any confusions concerning his gender.
Leo blinked, shaking his head as if trying to clear a hallucination. "Whoa. You just... you just went back."
"It’s easier on the ego," Walter said, his voice once again that familiar, gravelly baritone. He looked at Tim with a heavy expression. "But it's harder on the bank account. Being 'me' doesn't pay for physics labs or rent. Being her... that has potential."
Tim froze. He looked at his father, then back to the empty space where the beautiful woman had sat. The logic was cold and brutal, but it was undeniable. The money they needed—the massive amounts required to keep their lives afloat—wasn't in the old Walter. It was in the potential of him assuming any new form. Assuming... he pondered. And just then, he had a very pragmatic idea...
